Chapter 7 - The echoes of the past

The grand foyer of the Hamptons estate descended into absolute chaos. The Russian mercenaries moved with brutal efficiency, but Dante’s men matched them blow for blow. The fighting was entirely physical—heavy takedowns, disarms, and tactical restraint—but the sheer number of intruders was overwhelming.

Dante didn't waste a second. He pulled Emma up from the floor, keeping his massive body between her and the mercenaries. With a display of terrifying strength and precision, he neutralized two men who rushed them, knocking them unconscious before dragging Emma up the grand staircase.

They reached Sophia’s room. The little girl was sitting up in bed, crying silently, clutching the cream-colored bunny. Emma scooped her up instantly, wrapping the child tightly in her arms.

"The panic room is through my closet," Dante commanded, his chest heaving, his fair skin flushed with adrenaline. He ushered them into the master bedroom, locking the heavy doors behind them.

As Dante moved to open the hidden panel, Emma stopped him. She couldn't hold it in anymore. The Russians hadn't pointed at Dante. They had pointed at her.

"Dante, wait," Emma gasped, holding Sophia tight. "You need to know the truth. They aren't just here for Sophia. They are here for me."

Dante froze, his hand resting on the hidden panel. He turned around, his dark eyes narrowing with intense suspicion. "What are you talking about?"

"My sister," Emma cried, the tears finally spilling over her soft features. "My sister is Clara. She was Elena’s handler. I found the diary in the penthouse. I knew the lullaby because Clara sang it to me. I took the job at the restaurant because I was tracking the syndicate, trying to find out what happened to my sister."

Dante stared at her, the betrayal flashing across his sharp jawline. The woman he had just been about to kiss, the woman he trusted with his daughter’s life, was a spy.

"You lied to me," Dante said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper.

"I had to!" Emma pleaded, stepping closer. "Elena hired Clara to smuggle Sophia out. But they were intercepted. If the Russians are here for me, it means they think I know where Clara hid the documents proving Sophia’s bloodline."

The bedroom doors shuddered violently as heavy axes hacked at the wood from the hallway.

Dante looked at the terrified five-year-old girl, then at the beautiful, desperate woman holding her. The mafia boss made his choice. He slammed his hand against the hidden panel, opening the panic room.

"Get inside," Dante ordered, his voice devoid of emotion.

"What about you?" Emma asked, panicking.

"I am going to buy you time," Dante said, pulling a heavy metal bar from the wall to secure the doors from the outside. "If I don't come back in ten minutes, use the emergency tunnel to get to the extraction point."

He pushed them inside and sealed the heavy steel door. Emma fell to the floor of the panic room in total darkness, holding Sophia, weeping as the sounds of violent combat echoed through the walls. But the worst twist was yet to come. Her phone, which she had kept completely powered off to avoid tracking, suddenly vibrated in her apron pocket.

Emma pulled it out. It was a text message from an unknown number.

I am outside the estate. Bring the child through the tunnel, Emma. It's time to finish the job.

The message was signed: Clara.
