Chapter 8 - The innocent pawn

Emma stared at the glowing screen of her phone, her breathing shallow and frantic. Clara. Her sister was alive. She was outside the estate right now, waiting for Emma to bring the ultimate prize to the rival syndicate.
The heavy steel door of the panic room muffled the sounds of the fight above, leaving Emma alone with her thoughts and a trembling five-year-old girl. Sophia looked up at her, her pale face illuminated by the phone’s glow.
"Is Daddy coming back?" Sophia whispered, her voice tiny and heartbreaking.
Emma looked at the child. Clara was her blood, her family. But Clara had sold out Elena, and now she was demanding Emma hand over an innocent little girl to a ruthless Russian crime syndicate. Dante, the terrifying mafia boss, was out there risking his life to protect a child that wasn't even his, while Emma’s own sister was trying to sell her.
Emma made her decision. She powered off the phone completely.
Ten agonizing minutes passed. The heavy steel door finally groaned and slid open. Dante stood there, covered in dust, his white shirt torn, his fair skin bruised, but completely victorious. The threat had been neutralized. He reached out his large hand to Emma.
She took it, pulling Sophia up. "They didn't breach the room," Emma said softly, noticing the sheer exhaustion in Dante’s eyes.
Dante pulled them out of the dark space. The master bedroom was ruined, but the estate was finally quiet. His loyal men were securing the perimeter. He looked down at Emma, his gaze hard but searching.
"You didn't run," Dante noted, his deep voice quiet in the ruined room.
"I am exactly where I need to be," Emma replied, her absolute loyalty shining in her kind eyes.
Dante nodded slowly, the betrayal fading into a deep, profound respect. He escorted them downstairs to the heavily fortified central command room. The high commission and the Russian syndicate had failed their direct assault, which meant they would resort to political warfare.
"The council has called an emergency summit," Dante announced to his lieutenants, his intimidating presence fully restored. "They are demanding I bring the girl to neutral ground to prove her lineage. If I refuse, both syndicates will unite to wipe out our entire family."
"It's a trap, Dante," his head of security argued. "They will take her the moment you step out of the car."
"I know," Dante said calmly, adjusting his torn suit jacket. He turned to Emma. "I need you to stay here. I am going to the summit alone."
"No," Emma interrupted, stepping forward, clutching Sophia’s hand. "If you go alone, they will kill you for defying them. I am going with you. I know exactly what Clara did. I have the missing piece to this puzzle."
Dante stared at her, the protective instinct warring with his strategic mind. "It's too dangerous, Emma."
"She is my family now, too," Emma said fiercely, looking down at Sophia.

Before Dante could argue, the heavy command room doors opened. A perimeter guard stepped in, looking completely terrified. "Boss. There is a woman at the front gate. She came alone. She says she has an appointment with the nanny."
Emma’s blood ran cold. Clara hadn't waited in the woods. She had walked straight up to the front door.
