Chapter 10 - the threshold of tomorrow

Six months later, the early summer sun washed over the sprawling gardens of the Greenwich estate in brilliant golden light. Pink hydrangeas and white roses bloomed along the stone pathways, filling the air with a sweet, fresh fragrance.
Sitting on a wooden bench beside the grand stone fountain was Clara. She wore a simple, elegant yellow sundress, her dark red hair glowing in the sunlight. Her skin was healthy, her cheeks rosy, and her eyes sparkled with newfound life and vitality.
Beside her, little Emily was running across the lush grass, laughing happily as she chased a bright yellow butterfly, her sweet voice echoing continuously through the warm air.
Sitting on the other side of the fountain was Sarah, dressed in a sharp blazer and trousers, reviewing project files for the new Jenkins-Carter Foundation for Missing Mothers—a charitable organization fully funded by Jonathan to protect vulnerable women and children.
Jonathan walked down the marble steps of the terrace, dressed in a relaxed white linen shirt and dark trousers. He held two glasses of fresh iced lemonade, stepping over to the fountain and handing one to Clara.
"Thank you, Jonathan," Clara smiled, her voice soft and rich with warmth.
"How is the painting coming along?" Jonathan asked, gesturing toward the wooden easel set up near the garden path.
"It’s almost finished," Clara said, looking at the canvas depicting Emily playing under the grand oak tree. "I never thought I would have a life like this, Jonathan. Five months ago, I was in darkness."
"You belong here, Clara," Jonathan said softly, looking down at her with a look of quiet, unyielding devotion. "This is Emily's home, and you are her mother."
After the federal scandal six months ago, Lady Eleanor Vance had been sentenced to twelve years in prison for kidnapping, fraud, and corporate corruption. Victoria had signed a full, quiet divorce agreement, relinquishing all legal claims to Emily and moving permanently to Europe under a private settlement.
The Carter family had emerged stronger, bound not by corporate contracts or fake birth certificates, but by truth, love, and blood.
Emily ran up to the fountain, her cheeks flushed pink from playing. She grabbed Clara’s hand with one arm and Jonathan’s hand with the other, swinging her feet happily.
"Daddy! Mommy! Look what I found!" Emily cheered, holding up a small, perfectly round white pebble.
Jonathan laughed, kneeling down to scoop Emily into his arms while keeping his hand gently on Clara’s waist. "It’s beautiful, sweetheart."
Dante, the head of estate security who had replaced Marcus after a well-deserved promotion, walked down the stone path holding a confidential wax-sealed envelope.
"Mr. Carter," Dante said respectfully, stopping beside them. "A private courier just dropped this off from the central probate court in London. It was found inside the late Lord Vance’s private vault."
Jonathan took the envelope, opening the seal and pulling out a heavy parchment document inside.
As his dark eyes scanned the top line, his jaw clenching slightly. Written in faded black ink across the top was a shocking sentence:

Jonathan closed the document slowly, looking at Clara and Emily under the afternoon sun, leaving the next chapter of their lives hanging on the precipice of an extraordinary new secret...
