Chapter 4 - the broken nursery

A heavy, suffocating silence dropped over the formal parlor. The ambient crackle of the wood in the fireplace sounded like thunder in the quiet room.

Jonathan felt the blood drain from his face. His knuckles turned white as he gripped his knees. "What did you just say?"

"It’s a lie!" Victoria screamed, her voice cracking hysterically. "She’s lying! Jonathan, look at Emily! Look at her face! She has my eyes! She has my hair! How can you listen to this trash?"

Dr. Reynolds stepped forward, his calm demeanor faltering for the first time. "Sarah... that is a massive accusation. Falsifying a birth certificate and swapping an infant in a private medical facility is a federal crime."

"I know it is," Sarah said, her voice dropping to a somber, hollow tone. "That’s why I was destroyed for trying to stop it."

Sarah leaned forward, her thin hands trembling as she pointed toward Victoria. "Five years ago, when the baby was born without a heartbeat, Victoria’s mother—Lady Eleanor Vance—was in the room. She panicked. She said the Carter-Vance marriage contract required a direct heir, and that losing the baby would ruin the family merger."

Jonathan’s jaw tightened until his facial muscles ached. The Carter-Vance merger five years ago had combined two of the largest real estate empires on the East Coast. It was a deal worth three billion dollars.

"Go on," Jonathan whispered, his voice dangerously low.

"There was another young woman in the ward that same night," Sarah continued, tears rolling down her cheeks. "A young, unregistered surrogate who had been brought in through a private clinic. She gave birth to a healthy, beautiful baby girl at 2:15 AM. Within an hour of your wife's tragic loss, Lady Eleanor offered the chief surgeon half a million dollars to switch the medical tags."

"And where were you during this?" Jonathan asked, his voice shaking with restrained fury.

"I caught them in the nursery," Sarah choked out. "I saw Dr. Harrison swapping the blue wristbands. I threatened to call the police immediately. But before I could reach the nurse’s station, someone struck me from behind."

Sarah reached up, pulling back her gray knit hat to reveal a jagged, thick white scar running along the side of her scalp.

"When I woke up three days later in a public hospital downtown," Sarah whispered, "Saint Jude’s had suffered a massive electrical fire in the records wing. Dr. Harrison had vanished. The hospital board claimed I had been caught stealing narcotic painkillers and fired me. My nursing license was revoked, my apartment was burned down, and my name was dragged through the mud. I lost everything."

Jonathan slowly turned his head to look at Victoria.

His wife was standing against the mantlepiece, her body shaking uncontrollably, her eyes wide with a mixture of terror and guilt. She didn't look like an innocent woman being accused; she looked like a criminal whose fortress had just crumbled into dust.

"Victoria," Jonathan said, his voice terrifyingly soft. "Is Emily... my biological daughter?"

Victoria swallowed hard, her mouth opening and closing without producing a sound.

"Answer him, Victoria," Dr. Reynolds advised softly, looking at her with deep concern. "If this goes to court, DNA tests will take less than twelve hours."

Victoria fell to her knees on the Persian rug, burying her face in her manicured hands, sobbing hysterically. "I had no choice, Jonathan! My mother forced me! She said you would leave me if I couldn't give you a child! I was grieving! I was out of my mind!"

Jonathan stood up slowly. He didn't yell. He didn't throw things. The sheer, icy stillness of his posture was far more terrifying than any outburst.

He looked down at little Emily, who was still sitting on the carpet, gently stroking Sarah's dirty sleeve.

"If Emily isn't Victoria's child..." Jonathan murmured, his eyes locking onto Sarah with a sudden, chilling realization. "...then who was the young woman in the maternity ward?"
