Chapter 5 - the paper trail in the vault

The question hung in the air like a pendulum waiting to swing.

Sarah lowered her head, her dark red hair obscuring her face. "Her name was Clara. Clara Jenkins. She was my younger sister."

Jonathan felt as though a physical weight had struck his chest. "Your sister?"

"Clara was twenty-two," Sarah whispered, her voice thick with unhealed grief. "She was young, naive, and fell into debt after our parents died. A private agency offered her fifty thousand dollars to act as a anonymous surrogate for an elite family. But she didn't know the agency was corrupt."

"What happened to Clara?" Dr. Reynolds asked gently.

"The night of the fire... she disappeared from the hospital," Sarah sobbed. "The police told me she ran away with the money. But I know my sister. She would never have abandoned her baby. She knew something was wrong. I’ve spent the last five years living on the streets of Greenwich, searching every alley, every record office, every shelter, trying to find out where they took her."

Jonathan turned to Marcus, who was standing quietly by the door. "Marcus. Bring my legal team and my private security detail to the house immediately. Tell David to bring the private vault keys for the Vance family trust."

"Right away, sir," Marcus said, pulling his radio and stepping out into the hall.

Victoria looked up from the floor, her eyes red and swollen. "Jonathan, please... don't do this. My family will be ruined! The press will tear us apart!"

"You lied to me for five years, Victoria," Jonathan said, his tone devoid of any warmth. "You let me believe my daughter was mute because of some unexplained psychological trauma, when in reality, her subconscious mind knew she was living with a stranger!"

Jonathan walked over to Emily, kneeling beside her. The little girl looked up at him, her blue eyes clear and lucid for the first time in two years.

"Emily," Jonathan said gently, smoothing her hair back. "Do you know who this lady is?"

Emily nodded slowly, her small voice coming out soft and steady. "She came to my window... in the rain... two years ago."

Jonathan’s head snapped up. "What?"

"Two years ago," Sarah explained softly, looking at Jonathan with tearful eyes. "I found out where you lived. I sneaked onto the estate grounds late one night during a thunderstorm. I just wanted to see my sister's child through the nursery window. I held up the silver locket against the glass so she could see the picture."

"That was the night Emily stopped speaking," Dr. Reynolds gasped, realizing the connection instantly. "She saw Sarah through the window in the storm holding the locket, but when she tried to tell Victoria the next morning, Victoria dismissed it as a nightmare!"

"I didn't know!" Victoria wept from the floor. "I thought she was just having night terrors!"

May you like

"You suppressed her reality," Dr. Reynolds said sternly to Victoria. "You made her feel like her own eyes were lying to her. That is why she stopped speaking to you."

Jonathan stood up, his face set like iron. "We're going to the central registry office downtown. Right now."
