Chapter 1 - the locket on the sleeve

The warm golden glow of the crystal chandeliers inside Il Destino reflected off polished marble floors and white linen tablecloths. Soft violin music played in the background, masking the sharp, suffocating tension that had gripped the fine-dining room the moment Ricardo “Rico” Moretti walked in.
At thirty-two, Rico was a feared Mafia boss—tall, handsome, powerfully built, with a cold, commanding presence that made grown men tremble. He wore a perfectly tailored navy Brioni suit, a crisp white dress shirt, a dark tie, a luxury watch, and polished black shoes. But beneath his terrifying reputation was a grieving widower who had no idea how to comfort his traumatized child.
Beside him in the velvet booth sat three-year-old Leo. Blond, angelic, and deeply broken since his mother’s passing six months ago, the toddler wore a light blue formal outfit with a tiny bow tie. His small hands clutched a worn teddy bear so tightly his knuckles were white.
Suddenly, without warning, little Leo began screaming. His high-pitched sobs echoed off the tall glass windows. He kicked his small feet, violently throwing his silver plate across the table, sending gourmet food sliding across the white cloth.
The entire room froze in fear. Wealthy patrons lowered their forks, holding their breath.
Rico leaned over, his jaw clenching as he tried to exert control. His voice was a harsh, icy whisper.
"Leo. Basta. Enough."
"No! No! I want no!" Leo shrieked, his face turning red with breathless despair. He swiped his tiny arm across the table, sending a crystal water glass shattering onto the marble floor.
Near the service station, Marco Bellini, the nervous fifty-year-old restaurant manager, wiped sweat from his forehead, backed away in absolute terror, and motioned for the staff to stay back.
Dante Moretti, Rico’s massive, six-foot-four head of security, stepped forward cautiously. Bald, muscular, and intimidating, Dante lowered his giant frame to gently lift the screaming boy.
"Let Uncle Dante hold you, little boss," Dante murmured gently.
"No!" Leo fought wildly, kicking Dante’s broad chest and sobbing hysterically.
Frustration boiled over in Rico’s chest. He slammed his broad palm down onto the table with a loud crack that echoed like a gunshot. The patrons flinched.
"Is everyone in my employment incompetent?" Rico growled, his dark eyes burning with terrifying fury as he looked at Marco and his guards. "Make him stop."
Near the kitchen swinging doors stood twenty-four-year-old Clara Vance. Beautiful, gentle, emotionally intelligent, and quietly brave, Clara wore a pale pink waitress dress with a neat apron and black flats. Her soft brown hair was tied in a loose messy bun, her compassionate eyes fixed entirely on the screaming boy.
Beside her, Sarah Collins, another waitress in a black-and-white uniform, grabbed Clara’s sleeve in terror.
"Don’t do it, Clara," Sarah whispered, her voice shaking. "That’s the Butcher of Brooklyn. If you make a mistake, he’ll destroy this place."
"He’s scared," Clara said softly, her voice steady. She didn't see a dangerous syndicate boss; she saw a terrified, heartbroken toddler in desperate need of warmth.
Ignoring Sarah’s warning and walking past a gasping Marco, Clara picked up a small glass of warm milk from the counter, dropped a single sugar cube inside, and walked straight toward the boss's table.
Every eye in the restaurant locked onto her. Marco covered his face in panic.
Clara didn't reach for the child. She knelt down on the cold marble floor beside Leo's chair, keeping her distance, lowering herself so she wasn't looming over him. She held the warm glass with both hands, offering it softly.
"Hey, sweetheart… nobody’s mad at you," Clara whispered, her voice dripping with pure, unforced warmth. "Your throat hurts from crying, doesn’t it?"
Leo’s screaming faltered. He hiccuped, his tear-filled eyes turning toward the soft-spoken woman.
"You can hold this," Clara added with a gentle smile. "It’s warm."
Leo looked at the glass, then up at Clara’s gentle face. Trembling, the three-year-old reached out his small hands, took the glass, and took a slow sip. The soothing warmth relaxed his tiny shoulders. Within seconds, his frantic gasps subsided into quiet snuffles.
The room gasped in collective shock. Dante blinked in disbelief. Rico sat frozen, staring at the young waitress as if she had just performed a miracle.
Leo set the glass down. Still holding his teddy bear with his right arm, he reached out with his left hand and gripped Clara’s pink sleeve tightly. He looked up at Rico with big, glossy eyes.
"She smells like Mommy," Leo whimpered softly.
Rico went completely still, the air leaving his lungs. Clara’s breath caught in her throat. Dante and Marco exchanged terrified, bewildered glances.
Then, Leo pointed his tiny, trembling finger toward Clara’s chest—specifically at a delicate silver locket hanging beneath her uniform collar.

"Mommy had that too," Leo whispered.
Rico’s shocked expression instantly hardened into lethal, terrifying suspicion as he locked his eyes onto the silver pendant hanging around Clara’s neck.
