Chapter 2 - the silver pendant

The silence inside Il Destino was heavier than the winter air outside. Rico slowly pushed his chair back, his polished shoes clicking against the marble as he stood to his full, imposing height. Dante immediately took a step closer, his hand resting instinctively near his suit coat.

Clara remained on her knees, her heart hammering against her ribs, but her hand stayed gently over Leo's small fingers.

"Where did you get that locket?" Rico demanded, his voice a low, dangerous rumble that cut through the quiet room like a blade.

Clara swallowed hard, adjusting her posture but refusing to cringe away. "It was a gift from my grandmother, Mr. Moretti. I've worn it every day since I was a child."

Rico reached down, his broad, calloused fingers catching the delicate silver chain without touching her skin. He flipped the antique locket over in his palm. Carved into the tarnished silver backing were three distinct initials: E.V.M.

Rico’s dark eyes narrowed into lethal slits. Those were the initials of his late wife—Elena Vance Moretti.

"Your last name is Vance," Rico stated flatly, his dark gaze piercing right through her. "Are you related to the Vance family of upstate New York?"

"My father's family lived upstate," Clara answered quietly, her voice steady despite the sweat gleaming on Marco's forehead nearby. "I never knew them. My mother moved us to the city when I was four."

Leo tugged again on Clara’s sleeve, leaning his forehead against her knee. "Stay," the boy whimpered softly. "Don't go, pink lady."

Rico looked down at his son—the boy who had refused to speak more than three words a day for six straight months, now clinging to a total stranger like a lifeline.

"Marco," Rico called out without looking away from Clara.

Marco scrambled forward, bowing frantically. "Y-yes, Mr. Moretti! Anything! The meal is on the house, sir!"

"Fire this woman," Rico commanded flatly.

Marco gasped. "Sir?"

"Fire her," Rico repeated, pulling a thick stack of hundred-dollar bills from his Brioni jacket and tossing it onto the table. "And tell her to pack her belongings. She is coming with me."

Sarah let out a muffled gasp from the kitchen doorway, but Clara stood up slowly, keeping her eyes fixed on Rico.

"I am not for sale, Mr. Moretti," Clara said firmly, her rosy cheeks flushing with quiet defiance. "And I don't work for men who order people around like property."

Dante’s eyes widened slightly in shock. Nobody spoke to Rico Moretti like that and lived to tell about it.

A slow, terrifying smile touched Rico’s handsome face. "You aren't being hired as a maid, Miss Vance. You're being hired as my son's personal nanny. Three thousand dollars a week. Starting tonight."

Clara looked at little Leo, who was staring up at her with big, pleading eyes, clutching his teddy bear against his chest. She knew she should walk away. She knew the Moretti name meant danger, blood, and crime.

But as Leo reached out his small hand once more, Clara knew she couldn't leave the heartbroken boy behind.

"Five thousand a week," Clara countered quietly. "And I answer only to the boy's needs—not your orders."

Rico stared at her for three long seconds before giving a single, stern nod. "Deal."
