Chapter 1 - the birthday party

The grand ballroom of the Bellandi estate was a spectacular sight, lit by sparkling crystal chandeliers casting warm, golden light across high marble walls. Hundreds of wealthy guests in pristine evening wear laughed and clinked champagne flutes, celebrating the seventh birthday of Rosie Bellandi. In the center of the hall, seven-year-old Rosie stood in an elegant pale-pink party dress and matching pink flats. Overwhelmed by the loud music and towering crowds, the little girl began to weep softly, holding her small hands over her eyes.
Clara Bennett, the estate’s thirty-four-year-old maid, moved quickly through the crowd. Gentle, beautiful, and wearing a neat black-and-white maid uniform with a white apron and comfortable flats, Clara knelt down beside the crying child. She pulled a clean tissue from her apron pocket, softly wiping the girl's tears and holding her hands.
Before Clara could say a word of comfort, Celeste Bellandi, Victor’s forty-year-old fiancée, stormed over. Strikingly beautiful, cold, and ruthless, Celeste wore an extravagant emerald evening gown, heavy diamond necklace, matching earrings, and high heels. Her eyes flashed with pure venom as she grabbed Clara’s shoulder, pulling the maid away from the child, and slapped Clara hard across the face.
The sharp sound echoed across the immediate circle of guests. Clara stumbled back, her hand flying to her left cheek, which burned bright red from the force of the strike.
"Stop acting like you’re her mother!" Celeste spat coldly, towering over the maid.
At that exact moment, Victor Bellandi stepped into the ballroom through the heavy oak doors. At forty-five, Victor was a feared and immensely powerful Mafia boss—broad-shouldered, muscular, ruggedly handsome, and terrifyingly composed. Dressed in a custom midnight-black tuxedo with gold cufflinks, a luxury wristwatch, and polished leather shoes, his presence instantly commanded total silence across the room.
Rosie looked up, saw Victor, and then immediately turned away from Celeste. She ran straight back toward Clara, wrapping her tiny arms tightly around the maid's waist and hiding her face against Clara’s apron. Clara instinctively wrapped her arms protectively around the child.
Victor paused, his sharp, dark eyes fixing on the scene. He noticed the strange, effortless bond between his young daughter and the humble maid—a deep, instinctive connection that Rosie had never shown toward Celeste.
Before Victor could speak, the family’s fifty-five-year-old private doctor walked into the hall. Wearing a formal dark suit, the doctor held a thick, sealed white envelope in his hand. He walked past the silent guests straight toward Victor, stopping a foot away.
"The DNA results match the girl," the doctor said in a low, grave voice.
Celeste’s eyes widened in sudden panic. She lunged forward, snatching at the sealed envelope in the doctor's hand.
In a lightning-fast motion, Victor seized Celeste’s wrist, stopping her in mid-air. With cold, unyielding force, he pulled her back and slapped her hard across the face.
Celeste gasped, staggering backward from the blow. She lost her balance on her high heels and crashed heavily into the long banquet table behind her. Glassware, floral arrangements, and crystal carafes shattered everywhere as dark red wine splashed across the table, completely soaking the front of her emerald gown.
Victor didn't look at her twice. He tore open the white envelope, unfolding the certified genetic analysis.
Clara stood frozen, holding Rosie against her hip, staring at the papers in Victor's hand as the truth dawned on her.
"They told me my child was dead..." Clara whispered, her voice trembling violently as tears welled in her eyes. "Seven years ago at the clinic... they told me she didn't make it."
Victor slowly turned his head toward Celeste, who sat shivering on the floor among broken glass and spilled wine, her pale face drained of all color.

"Who paid them to lie?" Victor asked, his voice ice-cold.
Celeste’s mouth opened, but no sound came out as absolute terror gripped her face.
