Chapter 10 - the threshold of sixteen

Six months later, the Moretti estate was restored to breathtaking magnificence. Blooming white roses decorated the high stone archways, and warm sunlight washed over the pristine courtyard.
A small, intimate wedding ceremony was held in the private chapel on the estate grounds.
Evelyn walked down the marble aisle, radiant and breathtaking in a brand-new, hand-sewn lace wedding dress, her long dark hair cascading over her shoulders beneath a fresh, shimmering silk veil.
Waiting at the altar stood Lorenzo, impeccably handsome in his midnight-black tuxedo, a rare, radiant smile breaking across his broad, rugged features as he watched his bride approach.
Standing beside Evelyn as her maid of honor was Anna Reed, dressed in an elegant pale-blue gown, tears of happiness filling her eyes as she watched the couple she had helped unite.
Lorenzo took Evelyn’s hands into his broad palms, placing a massive diamond ring onto her finger. "I promise to love you, protect you, and honor you for every second of the rest of my life."
Evelyn smiled through her tears, leaning up on her tiptoes as Lorenzo drew her close, pressing his lips against hers in a passionate, deep kiss that sealed their long-delayed promise forever.
The small crowd of loyal family allies cheered loudly, throwing white rose petals into the air.
Later that evening, as the wedding guests enjoyed music and wine in the courtyard, Lorenzo and Evelyn stood alone on the master terrace overlooking the gardens.
Dr. Hayes walked onto the terrace, carrying an antique wooden box sealed with three heavy brass locks.
"Lorenzo, Evelyn," Dr. Hayes said quietly, setting the heavy box onto the stone table. "While our forensic team was clearing out the hidden cellar beneath the old bridal suite yesterday... they found this concealed behind the double stone wall."
Lorenzo stepped up to the table, his brow furrowing. "A secondary vault?"
"It belonged to your late father, Lorenzo," Dr. Hayes revealed, taking a fine silver key from his pocket and handing it over. "And according to the estate registry... it was placed there sixteen years ago."
Lorenzo took the key, inserting it into the central brass lock. With a sharp, metallic click, the heavy lid opened.
Inside the box lay a faded parchment map, a gold signet ring bearing an unfamiliar seal, and a sealed letter addressed to EVELYN MORETTI.
Evelyn reached out her trembling hand, unfolding the old parchment letter.
Written in dark, faded ink was a single, staggering message from Lorenzo's late father that rewrote the history of their entire past:
TO MY DEAR EVELYN — IF YOU ARE READING THIS, YOU HAVE RETURNED TO MY SON. BUT YOU MUST KNOW THE TRUTH ABOUT WHY YOU WERE BROUGHT INTO THIS HOUSE. YOU WERE NOT AN ORPHAN FOUND BY CHANCE. YOU ARE THE TRUE LEGAL HEIR TO THE VANCE SYNDICATE THRONE...
Evelyn gasped, dropping the parchment onto the stone table as her hands flew to her mouth in utter disbelief.

Lorenzo stood frozen, his dark eyes staring at the ancient gold signet ring resting inside the wooden box.
Slowly, Lorenzo picked up the signet ring, holding it up into the pale moonlight, leaving the breathtaking secret of her true identity hanging on the extraordinary threshold of a brand-new destiny...
