Chapter 10 - The Threshold of Truth

The rain beat a relentless rhythm against the tin roof of the carriage house as the final piece of the dark puzzle hung suspended between the two brothers.

"Baby A didn't die in the delivery room, Lorenzo," Matteo revealed, his voice dripping with sinister satisfaction. "There was no birth defect. Baby A was completely healthy."

Lorenzo felt his heart hammer against his ribs. "Where is he, Matteo?"

"He's been living right under your nose for the last eight years," Matteo murmured, leaning forward with a dark glint in his eyes. "Ask your precious housekeeper, Elena Bennett, why she suddenly applied for a job at your mansion eight years ago, right after her 'daughter' was born in the same private clinic where Valentina delivered!"

The revelation struck Lorenzo like a physical blow.

His mind raced back through the years—eight-year-old Sophia Bennett... her dark-brown hair... her brave, observant nature... her bright, expressive eyes that mirrored the exact blue-gray tint of his own bloodline.

Sophia wasn't Elena's biological daughter. She was Baby A—the firstborn twin, hidden away by Elena to protect the child from the ruthless power struggles of the Moretti family, raised in quiet love as a simple housekeeper's child!

"You..." Lorenzo breathed, horror and profound awe washing over his soul simultaneously. "You arranged the swap eight years ago..."

"Cole took my money to forge the records back then, too!" Matteo sneered, pointing the remote at the bench. "I kept the secret over Valentina's head for eight years to control her! But when you had a second child... another boy... I knew my chance at taking the throne was gone forever unless I cleared the board!"

Before Matteo could press the remote button, a small shadow stepped out from behind a stack of wooden crates near the workbench.

It was eight-year-old Sophia.

She had slipped through the back window of the carriage house unnoticed, her bare feet silent on the concrete floor. With a swift, fearless movement, her tiny hands grabbed the heavy brass wrench resting on the bench and slammed it down onto the metallic case, shattering the remote receiver instantly.

Matteo gasped, distracted for a split second.

Lorenzo moved with lightning speed. Closing the distance between them in a single stride, he disarmed Matteo with a powerful strike to his wrist, sweeping the baby safely into his left arm while bringing his right fist down hard against Matteo's jaw.

Matteo crashed to the concrete floor, dazed and defeated, as Marco and six armed guards burst through the carriage house doors, securing the perimeter instantly.

Lorenzo stood in the center of the room, holding his newborn son securely against his chest, while little Sophia stood beside him, looking up at him with her bright, familiar blue-gray eyes.

Lorenzo dropped to one knee beside the young girl. He reached out with his large, warm hand, gently brushing a strand of damp dark hair away from her face, seeing his own reflection in her brave, beautiful eyes.

"You saved him again, Sophia," Lorenzo whispered, his deep voice thick with emotion.

Sophia offered him a quiet, beautiful smile. "He's my brother, right?"

Lorenzo felt tears gather in his eyes—a rare, profound warmth breaking through the cold armor he had worn for years. He wrapped his broad arm around Sophia, pulling his daughter close against his side while holding his newborn son against his heart.

An hour later, as the dawn light broke over the New York skyline, the storm outside cleared, leaving the estate quiet and peaceful under a soft golden sky.

Matteo and Dr. Cole were removed from the property under heavy armed escort, facing absolute justice within the syndicate's tribunal, while Valentina was quietly relocated to a private family residence abroad, stripped of her standing.

Inside the grand sunlit living room of the main mansion, a warm fire crackled in the marble hearth.

Elena Bennett stood near the window, her hands clasped nervously, tears streaming down her fair cheeks as Lorenzo walked into the room holding both children.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Moretti," Elena wept softly. "Eight years ago, when Dr. Cole tried to dispose of Baby A... I couldn't let them hurt an innocent child. I took her and raised her as my own daughter... I only wanted her to be safe."

Lorenzo walked over to Elena and placed a broad, comforting hand on her shoulder.

"You didn't steal my daughter, Elena," Lorenzo said gently, his voice full of deep, permanent gratitude. "You saved her life. You gave her a mother's love when this house had nothing but darkness."

Elena looked up, her heart filling with overwhelming relief as Lorenzo smiled at her with genuine warmth.

"From this day on," Lorenzo declared, looking down at eight-year-old Sophia and his newborn son resting peacefully in his arms, "you stay right here as part of this family. Sophia is a Moretti, and no one will ever threaten my children again."

Sophia took Elena's hand, smiling brightly as the sun lit up the room, marking the beginning of a powerful new era—an empire reclaimed, a long-lost daughter embraced, and an unbreakable family forged in the light of truth.
