Chapter 9 - The Web of Betrayal

Inside the dim carriage house, surrounded by vintage automobiles and covered storage crates, stood Matteo Moretti.
Matteo held the small, swaddled newborn in one arm, while his other hand held a sleek black remote control wired to a small metallic case resting on the work bench beside him.
Standing near the back wall, tied to a wooden support beam, was Dr. Adrian Cole, his mouth taped shut, his white medical coat stained with grease and mud.
"I knew you'd come alone, Lorenzo," Matteo said, his voice calm, but a dark, unhinged edge echoed beneath his words. He didn't look like the polished younger brother anymore—his charcoal suit was rumpled, his hair damp from the rain.
Lorenzo stopped fifteen feet away, keeping his weapon trained directly on Matteo's chest.
"Put my son down, Matteo," Lorenzo said, his tone low and terrifyingly steady. "You are running out of options."
"Options?" Matteo laughed bitterly. "I've been playing options for five years, Lorenzo! While you sat on the throne, taking all the glory, managing the shipping empire, I was the one doing the dirty work in the shadows!"
"Is that why you tried to murder an infant?" Lorenzo asked, taking one slow, deliberate step forward.
"I didn't try to murder him!" Matteo snapped, his grip tightening around the baby blanket. "I paid Cole to hide him! I was going to raise him in Europe, away from this cursed family, while I took control of the syndicate here in New York!"
"And Baby A?" Lorenzo demanded, his dark eyes narrowing. "The twin?"

Matteo froze. A twisted, triumphant smile slowly spread across his handsome face.
"Ah," Matteo whispered softly. "So Valentina finally told you about the second bracelet."
