Chapter 1 - Five Minutes at Sunset

The golden light of the setting sun poured through the floor-to-ceiling arched windows of the Calder estate, casting a warm, amber glow across the private study. The room smelled of old leather, polished mahogany, and expensive cologne. At forty-four, Victor Calder was a man whose very name made the underground syndicates of the East Coast tremble. Tall, broad-shouldered, and muscular, he sat behind a massive mahogany desk, his broad hands resting over a stack of confidential financial documents. His ivory suit jacket, embroidered with subtle gold thread along the lapel, caught the fading light, contrasting sharply with the dark tattoos trailing up his neck and across the backs of his hands. Light stubble framed his jaw, and his intense gray-blue eyes remained fixed on the ledger before him.

Standing near the tall double doors was Vincent Hale, Victor’s forty-six-year-old head of security. Clad in a fitted black suit with a discreet earpiece, Vincent’s eyes continuously scanned the quiet room, his body language disciplined and alert.

The heavy oak door squeaked open just an inch.

A tiny four-year-old girl stepped silently into the study. Maisie Nolan had long blonde hair partly pinned back with small green clips, bright expressive eyes, and fair, rosy cheeks. She wore a simple green polka-dot dress, crisp white socks, dark shoes, and held a worn gray stuffed rabbit tightly under her arm.

She walked directly toward the desk, completely unbothered by the sharp, intimidating presence of the men in the room.

From the open doorway behind her, Clare Nolan appeared. Dressed in her classic navy housekeeping dress with white piping, a crisp white collar, and a spotless apron, the thirty-year-old mother froze in absolute alarm. Her long brown hair was tied into a neat bun, her face going pale as she realized where her fearless daughter had wandered.

Maisie reached the side of the grand mahogany desk. She reached out her small hand and gently touched the embroidered ivory sleeve of Victor’s suit jacket.

"Can you hug me for five minutes?" Maisie asked softly.

Victor’s hand froze mid-page. The pen in his fingers came to a complete halt.

Vincent Hale and the two armed guards standing near the balcony turned their heads slowly, staring at the little girl in utter, breathless shock. No one ever approached Victor Calder without permission, let alone made a physical request.

Victor slowly lowered the confidential document onto the desk. He turned his chair slightly and looked down at the child standing beside him. His intense gray-blue eyes softened just a fraction, though his face remained a calm, unreadable mask.

"Why five minutes?" Victor asked, his deep voice carrying a low, resonant rumble.

Maisie clutched her gray stuffed rabbit tighter against her chest and looked up into his eyes with complete innocence.

"Daddy said shorter doesn’t work," Maisie whispered.

In the doorway, Clare’s hand flew to her mouth. Her eyes widened with a sudden, sharp panic, her entire posture stiffening in terror.

Victor stared at the child for three long seconds. Slowly, the feared mafia boss opened his right arm, offering a silent invitation.

Maisie didn't hesitate. She scrambled up onto his lap, her tiny dark shoes brushing against his tailored trousers, and wrapped both of her little arms tightly around his broad neck.

At first, Victor stiffened. His muscular shoulders locked, unaccustomed to such raw, unshielded affection. But as the small child rested her rosy cheek against his open-collar white shirt, Victor slowly wrapped his broad, tattooed arm around her back, holding her securely against his chest.

Several feet away, Clare watched from the doorway, tears glistening in her nervous brown eyes, her chest rising and falling in shallow, frantic breaths.

As she hugged him, Maisie began tapping her tiny fingers gently against Victor’s shoulder, silently counting one, two, three, four...

As her green polka-dot dress shifted slightly against his lapel, Victor’s observant eyes caught the glint of a thin silver chain hanging beneath her collar. Resting at the end of the chain was an old, tarnished military-style identification tag.

Victor gently reached down with two fingers and lifted the cold metal piece into the light. He studied the initials deeply engraved into the front: J.C. 1994.

His calm, commanding face instantly changed. The blood seemed to drain from his cheeks.

Victor flipped the metal tag over in his hand. Engraved on the back was a sharp, distinct family crest—an eagle clutching a coiled serpent. It was the exact same crest printed on the silver frame resting behind his desk, holding an old photograph of Victor standing shoulder-to-shoulder with his younger brother from years ago.

Victor slowly turned his head toward the doorway, his gray-blue eyes locking onto the young housemaid.

"Where did her father get this?" Victor asked, his voice stunned, barely above a whisper.

Clare went completely pale, her knees trembling beneath her navy skirt.

Maisie pulled back slightly from Victor’s shoulder, looking up at him with wide, innocent eyes, and whispered softly into the silence of the room.

"Daddy said you’d know him."

Victor froze, his heart hammering against his ribs.
