Chapter 7 - The Ghost on the Phone

By dawn, the armored SUV pulled back through the heavy iron gates of the Calder estate in Providence.
The estate had been reinforced with twenty additional senior guards brought in from Victor’s most trusted territory in New York. The entire perimeter was a fortress of steel and silent vigilance.
Inside the grand kitchen, the morning sun poured through the high windows, illuminating the marble island. Clare sat at the wooden table, wearing a clean beige sweater provided by the household staff, drinking a warm cup of tea. Maisie sat beside her, happily eating a bowl of fresh strawberries while Vincent Hale stood near the doorway, supervising the security guards patrolling the gardens outside.
Victor stepped into the kitchen. He had changed into a fresh white dress shirt and dark trousers, though his shoulder holster remained strapped across his chest. He held a small, black electronic scanning device in his hand.
He walked over to the table and sat down across from Clare.
"We extracted the micro-chip from Maisie’s tag," Victor said softly, laying the tiny silver square onto the marble table between them.
Clare looked at the tiny chip, her breath catching. "Is it Julian’s ledger?"
"It’s more than a ledger," Victor revealed. "It contains audio recordings, bank transfers, and video logs recorded by Julian during the three months he was in hiding after the dock attack."
Vincent walked over from the doorway, leaning against the marble counter. "And boss... we verified the voice signatures on the audio files. They’re authentic."
Clare reached out her trembling hand, touching the edge of the marble table. "What did he say, Victor? Is he... is he alive?"
Victor looked deep into Clare’s brown eyes. "Julian died three years ago in a private medical facility in Montreal from complications related to his injuries from the dock explosion."
A quiet, heartbreaking sob escaped Clare’s lips. She covered her face with her hands, her shoulders shaking as five years of fragile hope finally dissolved into definitive grief.
Maisie stopped eating her strawberries, looking up at her mother with wide, sad eyes. She reached out her small hand and patted Clare’s arm gently. "Don't cry, Mommy. Uncle Victor is here."
Victor reached across the table, taking Clare’s hand in his broad palm, offering a steady, unwavering anchor amidst her pain. "He didn't abandon you, Clare. His logs prove that every single day he was in hiding, he was working to secure a trust fund for you and Maisie. He knew Arthur Vance and the Vane family were hunting him, so he kept his distance to keep you alive."
Clare wiped her tears, looking up into Victor’s stern, compassionate face. "Thank you for telling me the truth."
Suddenly, Clare’s personal burner phone—sitting inside her navy maid apron draped over the back of her chair—began to vibrate sharply.
The entire kitchen went completely silent.
Vincent Hale immediately pulled a signal-tracing scanner from his belt, pointing it toward the phone. "That line was only given to two people, boss. Her landlord in Boston... and Julian’s old contact."
Victor motioned for Clare to answer. "Put it on speaker."
Clare reached out with a trembling finger and tapped the green button on the screen. "Hello?"
A heavy, raspy voice echoed through the speaker—a voice that sounded as though it had been damaged by smoke and salt water, yet carried an unmistakable, familiar cadence.
"Clare..." the raspy voice whispered through static. "If you're at the Calder estate... tell my brother to look at the bottom of the lake photograph in his study."

The call disconnected instantly.
Victor stood up so fast his chair scraped loudly against the marble floor. "Vincent! With me!"
