Chapter 3 - The Threat at the Gate

The atmosphere inside the Calder mansion transformed within minutes. What was once an orderly, luxurious palace became a heavily fortified fortress.
Outside the tall iron gates, heavy rain had begun to fall, slicking the manicured lawns and darkening the grey stone facade of the estate. Inside, security shutters descended over the ground-floor windows with heavy metallic thuds.
In the master suite on the second floor, Clare sat on the edge of a massive four-poster bed, combing Maisie’s long blonde hair. The little girl had finally fallen asleep, clutching her gray stuffed rabbit against her chest, her breathing soft and steady.
The heavy door opened, and Victor stepped inside. He had removed his ivory suit jacket, revealing his broad chest and shoulder holster over his white dress shirt. The sleeve tattoos on his arms stood out against his fair skin as he walked silently across the hardwood floor.
Clare stood up immediately, smoothing her navy skirt. "Is the house secure?"
"Vincent has thirty men on the perimeter," Victor replied, stopping a foot away from her. "The estate is locked down. Nobody gets in or out without my personal clearance."
He looked down at the sleeping child on the bed. His face, usually set in hard, unyielding lines, softened with a complex mixture of grief and protective fury. "She looks like him. She has his eyes."
"She has his courage, too," Clare said with a faint, sad smile. "She isn't afraid of anything. She spent four years asking me when she was going to meet her Uncle Victor. Julian talked about you every single day before he disappeared."
Victor turned his gaze back to Clare. His piercing gray-blue eyes searched her face. "Julian told you there was a traitor in my organization. Did he give you a name?"
Clare shook her head. "No. He said he didn't have total proof yet. But he spoke about a black ledger—a book where he recorded every illegal bribe, every offshore transfer, and every message sent between your lieutenants and the rival families."
"Where is the ledger, Clare?" Victor asked softly.
"I don't know," Clare admitted, holding her hands tightly together. "Julian hid it before he vanished. But the message you received on your phone... they think I have it. They've been watching us, Victor. That’s why I came here last week. A dark SUV followed us from our apartment in Boston. I knew our time was up."
A soft knock sounded at the bedroom door. Vincent Hale stepped into the room, holding an encrypted tablet in his large hands.
"Boss," Vincent said, his rough voice tight with concern. "Our street sensors picked up three unidentified sedans parked two miles down the approach road. They’re running blacked-out plates."
Victor stepped away from the bed, his demeanor instantly returning to that of a lethal mafia Don. "Are they moving?"
"Not yet," Vincent replied. "They’re waiting for midnight. But there's something else. We ran a trace on the phone number that sent you the ransom text."
"And?" Victor pressed.
"The signal bounced off a cell tower located less than five hundred yards from this estate," Vincent revealed, his dark eyes grim. "The message wasn't sent from Boston or the city harbor, boss. It was sent from inside our own security perimeter."
Clare gasped, taking a quick step backward toward her daughter's bed.
Victor slowly turned his head to stare at Vincent. The air in the master suite felt thick enough to suffocate.
"Check the internal comms logs," Victor commanded coldly. "Find out which guard used the secondary radio band in the last thirty minutes."
"Already on it," Vincent said. "And boss... what about the girl and her mother?"

Victor looked back at Clare and little Maisie. He reached down into his pocket, pulled out the small silver military tag, and closed his broad fist tightly around it.
"They stay in my private quarters," Victor declared with absolute finality. "Anyone who wants to touch my brother's child will have to go through me first."
