Chapter 1 - the voice behind the door

The afternoon sun filtered through the soaring stained-glass windows of the grand Moretti ballroom, painting long golden ribbons across the polished hardwood floor. In the center of the vast, quiet room sat a magnificent Steinway grand piano—black, gleaming, and untouched for three agonizing years.

Cleaning the brass fixtures nearby was thirty-year-old Giulia Bennett. Dressed in her classic black-and-white maid uniform, her soft brown hair swept into a neat bun, Giulia kept a watchful eye on her four-year-old daughter, Mia.

Mia wore a pale-pink lace dress with simple shoes, her curly light-brown hair bouncing as she crawled on her hands and knees beneath the dark belly of the grand piano, holding her worn cloth doll tightly under her arm.

Suddenly, Mia's small fingers brushed against a loose wooden panel built into the piano's lower soundboard. Curious and fearless, the little girl reached into the dark crevice and pulled out a dusty, rectangular object—an old cassette tape with the name Dante written across the white paper label in elegant, sweeping handwriting.

The heavy double doors of the ballroom pushed open.

Dante Moretti stepped into the room. At forty-two, the feared Chicago Mafia boss commanded an intimidating, terrifying authority. Tall, muscular, and broad-shouldered in a perfectly tailored black suit, open-collar white shirt, and luxury wristwatch, dark tattoos snaked up his neck, while his handsome jaw was framed by light stubble.

Dante froze the moment he looked down at the child beneath the piano.

Mia crawled out from under the dark wood, smiling brightly as she held the cassette up toward him with both of her small hands.

Dante’s breath caught in his throat. He recognized that handwriting instantly. It belonged to his late wife, Chiara, who had passed away under mysterious circumstances three years earlier.

Dante walked forward with slow, heavy strides, his polished black shoes striking the floor with deliberate weight. He crouched down in front of Mia, his broad, calloused hands trembling slightly as he took the small plastic tape from her fingers.

Before he could speak, the side door of the ballroom swung open.

Thirty-nine-year-old Valentina Moretti walked into the room, her high heels clicking sharply against the floor. Dante’s younger sister exuded effortless, high-society glamour in a black designer dress, diamond earrings, and a glittering gold bracelet.

The moment Valentina’s eyes caught the cassette tape in Dante’s hand, her composed, elegant face instantly paled. Her eyes widened with sudden, uncontrolled tension before she quickly pulled her hands behind her back.

Valentina (tense): “Leave the past buried.”

Dante’s sharp eyes narrowed. He looked up at his sister, noticing instantly that she had reacted with panic before anyone had even explained what Mia had found under the piano.

Without a word, Dante lowered himself beneath the grand piano to inspect the hidden compartment. Attached to the inner frame was an old leather strap. But as Dante ran his broad fingers over the dark wood, he noticed that while the surrounding frame was thick with three years of dust, the edges of the compartment had been freshly wiped.

Someone had been searching for this exact cassette earlier that very day.

Dante stood up slowly, his dark gaze locking onto Valentina, who turned her face away and quickly exited the ballroom.

Late that night, inside Dante’s private second-floor study, the room was shrouded in dim lamplight.

Dante sat behind his dark mahogany desk, his black jacket removed, his white shirt open at the collar. He pressed the heavy silver button of an vintage cassette player sitting on his desk.

Static filled the quiet study, crackling softly through the speaker.

Dante sat completely still, his broad chest rising and falling in shallow breaths.

Suddenly, a soft, familiar voice echoed through the room—a voice he hadn't heard in three long years.

Chiara’s Recording (softly): “Dante… if you’re hearing this, I was right to be afraid.”

Dante leaned closer to the cassette player, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the edge of the desk.

Chiara’s recorded voice dropped into a trembling whisper.

Chiara’s Recording: “If Valentina is with you… don’t let her hear what comes next.”

Dante slowly turned his head toward the closed wooden study door.

Underneath the bottom edge of the door, where the warm light crossed the dark carpet, a slow, silent shadow moved.
