Chapter 13

Evelyn changed tactics once she understood the genetics.

She sent Maddie gifts.

Expensive ones.

A miniature gold bracelet engraved with the Bennett crest.

A custom dollhouse modeled after the family estate.

A child-sized pearl necklace.

Rachel returned all three.

Then Evelyn requested mediation over grandparent contact.

Maya attended.

Rachel expected arrogance.

She got something worse.

Tenderness.

Evelyn brought Nathan’s childhood photographs.

Nathan at five.

Nathan missing both front teeth.

Nathan holding a baseball trophy.

Nathan asleep beside a Labrador.

“She has his eyes,” Evelyn said.

Rachel looked at her.

“Sixteen days ago you thought those same eyes belonged to somebody who didn’t deserve a birthday cake.”

Evelyn stiffened.

“I was wrong about her blood.”

Rachel felt anger rise.

Maya did not need to stop her.

Rachel controlled it herself.

“That is the problem.”

Evelyn frowned.

“What?”

“You think the mistake was the DNA.”

Rachel leaned forward.

“The mistake was believing DNA determined whether you were allowed to be cruel.”

Evelyn’s expression hardened.

“She is Nathan’s only child.”

“She is Maddie.”

“I lost my son.”

“And now you want his daughter.”

“Yes.”

At least that was honest.

Rachel studied her.

“You don't get to turn her into Nathan’s replacement.”

Evelyn looked wounded.

Rachel continued.

“You also don’t get to love her now because a test made her acceptable.”

“I am her grandmother.”

“You were her grandmother at the party.”

Silence.

The mediation ended without visitation.

Rachel did not say never.

She said not now.

Evelyn would need therapy.

Accountability.

Time.

And any future contact would happen only if professionals believed it served Maddie rather than Evelyn’s grief.

For the first time, Evelyn discovered that Bennett blood gave her no automatic authority.

That consequence was more meaningful than any public humiliation Rachel could have designed.
