Chapter 6

Evelyn’s explanation arrived through outrage.

She demanded to see Rachel.

Maya recommended one controlled meeting.

Rachel agreed because she wanted a specific answer.

Did Evelyn know?

They met at Maya’s office.

Evelyn entered wearing pearls and carrying herself as if the room belonged to her.

Rachel did not offer coffee.

Evelyn sat.

“I want to see Maddie.”

“No.”

“She is Nathan’s daughter.”

Rachel stared at her.

Six days earlier, Evelyn had shoved the child into a cake because she believed Maddie lacked Bennett blood.

Now biology had transformed her tone.

That disgusted Rachel.

“You didn't want her at the birthday table.”

“I was misled.”

“You assaulted a five-year-old.”

“I lost my temper.”

“With a five-year-old.”

Evelyn’s face hardened.

“Grant told me the clinic used an anonymous donor.”

That answered the first question.

“You didn’t know?”

“No.”

“About Nathan?”

“No.”

Maya watched closely.

Evelyn continued.

“I begged Nathan not to destroy those samples.”

Rachel felt her stomach tighten.

“But he insisted.”

“Yes.”

“Did you override the destruction request?”

“No.”

“Did you ask Grant to?”

Evelyn hesitated.

“No.”

Rachel caught it.

Not a confident no.

But Maya did not press yet.

Evelyn said:

“I knew Grant was struggling after his diagnosis. I told him there were ways to preserve the family line.”

“What ways?”

“Donor programs. Surrogacy. Adoption if necessary.”

Rachel stared.

“Adoption wouldn’t preserve blood.”

Evelyn’s mouth tightened.

“No.”

There it was.

Even in correction, the obsession survived.

Maya asked:

“Did you know the descendant trust would transfer assets outside Bennett control if no biological descendant qualified?”

“Of course.”

“Did you discuss that with Grant before Rachel’s procedure?”

Evelyn looked at her.

“I discuss family trusts with my son.”

“When?”

“I don’t remember.”

Maya opened a notebook.

“That’s unfortunate.”

Evelyn became angry.

“You think I arranged this?”

Rachel answered.

“I think you taught Grant that blood mattered enough to justify things normal people would find monstrous.”

Evelyn stood.

“I will not be spoken to—”

Rachel stood too.

“Yes, you will.”

The older woman froze.

Rachel’s voice remained steady.

“You taught my daughter that love depended on DNA.”

She pointed toward the door.

“Now that the DNA satisfies you, you want access again.”

Evelyn’s face changed.

“She is my granddaughter.”

Rachel shook her head.

“She was your granddaughter six days ago.”

Evelyn had no answer.

That meeting gave Maya another clue.

Evelyn knew the trust consequences years before Maddie’s conception.

Grant knew them too.

May you like

But Grant had hidden Nathan’s paternity even from the woman most obsessed with producing a Bennett descendant.

Whatever he had done, he needed control of the secret more than he needed Evelyn’s approval.
