Chapter 4 - The Stainless Steel Tray

Carmine moved immediately, grabbing a polished stainless-steel medical basin and setting it on the small rolling table right beside Gabriel’s knee.

Dr. Cole backed up half a step, his breathing becoming shallow. "Gabriel, I strongly advise against letting an uneducated servant dictate your medical care. Tampering with an fresh incision risks introducing severe infection!"

"Check what she found," Gabriel said. The words were quiet, but they carried the weight of an executioner's gavel.

Dr. Cole swallowed hard. Sweat began to bead along his hairline. He looked at Carmine, whose right hand had slipped inside his black suit jacket, resting casually against the leather holster beneath his arm.

Reluctantly, Dr. Cole picked up a pair of micro-surgical snips. His fingers trembled slightly—a detail that did not escape Gabriel’s notice.

"Which one?" Dr. Cole muttered defensively, trying to maintain his professional facade.

"The third loop from the top," Elena advised calmly, standing just behind Carmine. "That is where the tension knot is locked."

Dr. Cole glared at her with pure venom, but under the suffocating stare of Gabriel Falcone, he had no choice. He carefully slid the tip of the snips beneath the thick black thread and clipped the knot.

The moment the synthetic fiber was severed, the thread did not spring open like normal flexible silk. It snapped with a rigid, metallic ping, coiling tightly like a cut piece of plastic wire.

Dr. Cole used tweezers to lift the severed piece of black thread and dropped it into the stainless-steel basin.

Everyone in the room leaned forward. For a second, nothing happened. Then, as the fiber lay against the cold, bright steel, a thick, dark liquid began to ooze slowly from the core of the thread.
