Chapter 1 - The silent boy

The city sidewalk was cold, swept by a bitter autumn wind that rustled the fallen leaves against the concrete. Maya Carter pulled her faded cream cardigan tighter around her shoulders, her worn white sneakers resting near the edge of the curb. She was twenty-eight, homeless, and exhausted, her soft brown hair tied into a messy bun that framed her beautiful, fair face. Her rosy cheeks stung from the chill, but she barely noticed. All her attention was focused on the small, frightened figure sitting just a few feet away.

He was a little boy, no older than seven. He looked entirely out of place on the dirty pavement. He wore an expensive, immaculate blue winter coat and pristine designer sneakers. His fair skin was pale, his rosy cheeks streaked with fresh tears. He sat with his knees pulled to his chest, his large, sad gray eyes staring blankly ahead. In his small, trembling hand, he clutched a crumpled photograph.

Maya looked down at the half-wrapped sandwich in her lap. It was her only meal for the day, bought with the last few coins in her weathered shoulder bag. Her stomach ached with hunger, but her deeply compassionate heart ached more for the child. She noticed his eyes darting toward the food.

Moving slowly so she wouldn't startle him, Maya slid closer on the concrete.

“Are you lost, sweetheart?” she asked gently, her voice warm and soothing.

The boy stayed perfectly still. He looked at her, his expression a heartbreaking mixture of fear and longing, but he did not utter a single word.

Maya studied his tear-streaked face. She recognized the profound, heavy silence of trauma. She had seen it in the shelters, and she had felt it in her own life. Slowly, with a steady hand, she held out her only sandwich toward him.

“You don’t have to talk,” Maya said softly, offering a reassuring, gentle smile. “I’ll stay with you.”

The boy hesitated. His eyes flicked from the sandwich to Maya’s kind, beautiful face. Slowly, his small hand reached out. He took the sandwich and began to eat hungrily. Maya watched him with a quiet sense of relief, reaching into her bag to offer him the last of her bottled water.

As he drank, Maya’s eyes fell upon the photograph clutched in his other hand. It was a picture of a breathtakingly beautiful woman with a bright, radiant smile. Maya looked at the boy with deep concern, realizing the woman must be his mother.

Seeing Maya look at the photo, tears immediately welled in the boy’s eyes. He didn't pull away. Instead, he scooted closer on the cold concrete. His small fingers reached out and gripped the sleeve of Maya’s faded cream cardigan, holding onto her like a lifeline.

“Will you leave?” the boy asked in a small, trembling whisper.

Maya’s heart melted. She gently placed her hand over his small fingers, slowly shaking her head.

Before she could speak, the screech of heavy tires shattered the quiet street. Three massive black SUVs raced into the grocery store parking lot, braking hard against the curb. The doors flew open simultaneously. Tall, intimidating men in pristine black suits, black ties, and earpieces stepped out with disciplined, military precision.

Maya’s survival instincts flared. She rose to her feet instantly, placing herself squarely between the terrifying men and the little boy, shielding him with her own body.

“Stay behind me,” Maya commanded firmly, her voice steady despite the fear racing through her veins.

The door of the middle SUV opened slowly. Vincent Moretti stepped out.

He was a man who commanded the very air around him. In his late forties, Vincent was legendary, immensely powerful, and deeply masculine. He was tall, muscular, and ruggedly handsome, his dark hair and light stubble framing a face that was frighteningly calm. Beneath the cuffs of his perfectly tailored black suit and black dress shirt, the faint edge of dark tattoos hinted at a violent past. His luxury wristwatch caught the fading sunlight as he locked his cold, piercing eyes on Maya.

From behind Maya’s legs, the little boy suddenly stepped forward. He bypassed Maya’s protective stance and stared up at the towering, terrifying Mafia Boss. His small shoulders trembled.

“Dad,” the boy whispered.

May you like

Vincent Moretti froze. The cold, commanding presence of the legendary boss shattered in an instant. The bodyguards around him went perfectly still, their stoic expressions breaking into absolute shock.

For the first time in two years, Noah Moretti had spoken.
