Chapter 3 - The shadow in the hall

Two weeks passed. The sprawling Moretti estate was a fortress of silent routines, disciplined guards, and cold perfection. But the atmosphere inside Noah’s playroom had entirely transformed.
Maya sat on the plush carpet, her soft brown hair falling over her shoulders as she helped Noah build a towering castle out of wooden blocks. Noah was smiling—a small, tentative expression that brought color back to his pale, rosy cheeks. He still rarely spoke, reserving his quiet whispers exclusively for Maya, but the heavy veil of his trauma was slowly lifting.
From the second-floor interior balcony, Vincent watched them. He stood perfectly still, his hands resting on the marble railing. His black shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, revealing the edge of his dark tattoos. He found his gaze lingering not just on his son’s newfound happiness, but on Maya. He watched the gentle way she moved, the genuine warmth in her smile, and the quiet, unbreakable resilience she carried. She didn't fear him like the others did. She challenged him.
Later that evening, Maya was walking back to her suite from the kitchen, holding a glass of warm milk for Noah. The hallways of the estate were usually heavily patrolled by the men in black suits, but the west corridor was oddly empty.
As she approached Noah’s bedroom, she noticed the door was slightly ajar. A woman in a standard maid’s uniform was standing over Noah’s bed.
Maya’s street instincts, honed by years of surviving the unforgiving city, flared instantly. The woman’s posture was wrong. She wasn't carrying fresh linens. Her hand was slipping into the pocket of her apron.
“What are you doing?” Maya demanded, her voice echoing sharply in the quiet hall.
The maid spun around, her eyes widening in panic. Maya didn't hesitate. She dropped the glass of milk—it shattered loudly against the hardwood floor—and sprinted into the room, placing herself squarely between the stranger and the sleeping boy.
The false maid reached into her apron and pulled out a heavy, dark object. Maya didn't wait to see what it was. She shoved the woman backward with all her strength, knocking her into the heavy oak dresser.
“Vincent!” Maya screamed at the top of her lungs.
Within seconds, the hallway thundered with heavy footsteps. Vincent burst into the room, followed immediately by four massive bodyguards. The false maid tried to run, but the guards subdued her instantly, pinning her cleanly to the floor and disarming her without a single drop of blood being shed.
Vincent’s chest heaved. He looked at the neutralized threat, then his dark, terrifying eyes snapped to Maya. She was standing over Noah’s bed, her arms wrapped protectively around the little boy, who had woken up and was clinging to her neck.

Vincent walked slowly toward the bed. The cold, legendary Mafia Boss was visibly shaken. He looked at Maya, his expression a complex war of absolute fury at the security breach and profound, overwhelming gratitude.
“Take her to the holding cells,” Vincent ordered his men, his voice like cracking ice. He reached out and gently touched Maya’s trembling shoulder. “You saved him.”
