Chapter 4 - The hidden photograph

The estate was placed on absolute lockdown. Security patrols were tripled. The false maid was quickly identified as a spy working for the Falcone family, Vincent’s most bitter rivals.
The next afternoon, Maya was trying to distract Noah with a game of hide-and-seek in the massive library. While looking for a hiding spot, she pressed against a heavy wooden panel that unexpectedly clicked open, revealing a hidden, dust-free room.
Maya stepped inside carefully. It wasn't a secret passageway; it was a shrine.
The small room was filled with beautiful, elegant things. A wedding dress preserved in glass, delicate jewelry boxes, and hundreds of photographs. They were all pictures of the beautiful woman from Noah’s crumpled photograph.
As Maya walked deeper into the room, she saw a large newspaper clipping framed on the desk. The headline made her heart stop: Billionaire's Wife Caught in Syndicate Crossfire. Tragic Accident or Targeted Hit?
“You shouldn't be in here,” a deep, rough voice echoed from the doorway.
Maya gasped and spun around. Vincent stood in the hidden entrance. He wasn't wearing his suit jacket; his black dress shirt was rolled up to his elbows, revealing the intricate, dark tattoos that mapped his muscular forearms. His expression was unreadable.
“I’m sorry,” Maya whispered, stepping away from the desk. “I didn't mean to pry. I was just playing with Noah.”
Vincent walked into the room, his eyes scanning the photographs of his late wife. The terrifying, commanding aura around him seemed to dim, replaced by a heavy, suffocating grief.
“Her name was Elena,” Vincent said softly, picking up a silver frame. “She was innocent. She hated my world. I promised her I would keep her safe, and I failed. Noah was in the car with her when the Falcones ambushed us. He saw everything. That was the day he stopped speaking.”
Maya felt a lump form in her throat. She looked at this immensely powerful man and finally understood the source of his cold, iron-clad control. It wasn't just power; it was a desperate attempt to prevent his heart from ever breaking again.
“You didn't fail him, Vincent,” Maya said gently, taking a step toward him. “You’re doing everything you can to protect him now.”
Vincent turned to face her. He stepped impossibly close, looking down into her beautiful, fair face. The air between them suddenly felt thick, crackling with an unspoken, magnetic tension. He reached out, his rough, calloused fingers gently brushing a stray lock of soft brown hair behind her ear.

“You made him find his voice,” Vincent whispered, his dark eyes burning into hers. “Now you're making me find my pulse.”
Maya held her breath, her heart hammering against her ribs. She was a homeless girl from the streets, and he was the king of the underworld, but in that quiet room, the boundaries between them ceased to exist.
