Chapter 1 - The frosted glass

The grand entrance of the plaza hotel was a cinematic masterpiece of winter luxury. Thousands of warm, golden fairy lights were tightly woven through towering evergreen arches, casting a brilliant and festive glow over the snow-dusted pavement. Valets in crisp crimson uniforms rushed to open the doors of sleek black town cars, welcoming the city's most elite residents into the annual Christmas gala. Inside the heavy glass doors, the lobby was a vision of unimaginable wealth, featuring a massive pine tree dripping in crystal ornaments and velvet ribbons. The guests, stepping out of their luxury vehicles, were a parade of high society. Their fair, rosy-cheeked skin caught the radiant light of the hotel entrance, and the cadence of crisp, confident American accents floated in the freezing winter air over the faint sound of a string quartet playing carols inside. It was a picture of absolute, untouchable power. Yet, away from the glittering center of the red carpet, a deeply cruel scene was unfolding in the shadows.
Lucy was only seven years old. Her fair skin was flushed a deep pink from the biting cold, and her small, fragile frame was swallowed entirely by a donated, oversized winter coat that had clearly belonged to a much larger boy. A frayed, knitted gray hat was pulled down tightly over her ears, and her worn, scuffed boots let the freezing snow seep directly into her socks. Her small hands, raw from the brutal wind, tightly clutched a half-eaten dinner roll she had managed to beg from a kind bakery worker two blocks away. She stood near a frosted lamppost, watching the beautiful, warm people walk into the hotel, her breath pluming in the freezing air like little clouds. She took a tiny, hesitant step closer to the warmth of the entrance, just wanting to feel the heat radiating from the glass doors.
Before she could even reach the edge of the red carpet, a harsh, sharp clicking of designer heels cut through the ambient noise of the busy street. Camille Sterling moved with the terrifying, predatory grace of a woman who viewed the entire world as something to be stepped on. At thirty-nine, she was breathtakingly beautiful, her aristocratic features sharp and flawlessly composed. She wore an extravagant silver Christmas gown that shimmered like liquid frost under the hotel lights, demanding the attention of everyone around her. A blinding, heavy diamond necklace rested against her collarbone, matching the massive diamond earrings that swung gently as she walked. She had stepped outside to wait for her husband’s town car, but her icy blue eyes quickly locked onto the small, dirty child daring to stand near her pristine silver heels.

Without breaking her elegant stride, Camille stepped right up to the little girl. Lucy looked up, her large, innocent eyes wide with absolute awe at the beautiful lady in the shining dress. Camille did not smile. Her fair, perfectly manicured hand shot out with the speed of a viper, her grip like a vice. She snatched the small piece of bread directly from Lucy’s freezing fingers. With a look of utter, profound disgust, Camille turned and tossed the bread into a nearby wrought-iron trash can.
“Know your place, you poor little nobody!” Camille sneered, her voice cold and venomous, completely at odds with her angelic appearance. Lucy shrank back, tears instantly welling in her eyes as the cold wind bit into her now-empty hands. She didn't cry out, too conditioned by the harshness of the streets to make a scene, but her small shoulders began to shake violently. From the heavy brass-trimmed doors of the hotel, a massive figure stepped out into the freezing night, his sharp eyes instantly catching the cruel scene unfolding at the edge of the light.
