Chapter 4 - The shattering of silver

Camille saw the birthmark. She heard the lullaby. She saw the terrifying realization locking into place on Richard’s rugged face. Decades of meticulous planning, millions of dollars in bribes, and her entire luxurious existence were about to evaporate in the freezing winter air. She lunged forward, her extravagant silver gown dragging through the dirty slush. She reached past Richard, her manicured fingers clawing violently at Lucy’s small shoulder, attempting to drag the child away by absolute force.
“Security! Get this lying little trash away from my brother-in-law!” Camille shrieked, her American accent losing all its polished refinement, turning shrill and desperate. Lucy cried out in sudden pain as Camille’s nails dug into her skin through the heavy coat. Richard’s reaction was instantaneous and explosive. The billionaire moved with the lethal, terrifying speed of a deeply protective father. He shot up from the pavement, his massive hand catching Camille by the wrist before she could drag Lucy another inch. He yanked her hand off the child with bone-bruising force. Then, completely abandoning his iron-clad public restraint, Richard pulled Camille back and slapped her hard.
It was a devastating blow. The sheer masculine force behind it sent the socialite stumbling awkwardly backward in her designer heels. Camille lost her footing completely and crashed backward into a massive, towering Christmas display of stacked glass presents and mirrored ornaments flanking the hotel doors. The impact was deafening. Giant decorative boxes crumpled, and hundreds of mirrored ornaments scattered and shattered across the red carpet in a spectacular wave of destruction. Camille collapsed into the ruins of the display, gasping frantically for air. A dark, angry bruise immediately began to form on her fair cheek.
The entire hotel entrance fell dead silent. The valets froze. The wealthy guests stopped breathing. Richard Sterling, a man famous for his absolute control, had just struck his brother's wife in public. Richard didn't even look at the wreckage he had caused. He immediately turned his back on the crowd and dropped to his knees again in front of Lucy. The little girl looked up at Richard, her tiny frame trembling from the chaos.

“My mom said my father’s name is Richard,” Lucy whispered, her voice shaking but carrying clearly through the silent crowd. The air left Richard’s lungs. He stood up slowly, the gentle father vanishing, replaced entirely by the commanding, ruthless titan of industry. He slowly turned toward Camille, who was trying to push herself up from the broken glass, her face completely pale with terror.
“You told me my daughter was dead,” Richard said, his voice ice-cold. Camille took a frightened step backward, realizing she had just awakened a monster.
