Chapter 10 - The threshold of the unknown

The morning sun cast a brilliant, blinding light across the snow-covered skyline. Inside the lavish, heated guest bedroom of the penthouse, little Lucy sat up in bed, eating a massive stack of pancakes prepared by the private chef. Richard sat beside her, no longer wearing the intimidating tuxedo, but a soft gray sweater. His rugged, handsome face was exhausted, carrying the heavy weight of a sleepless night, but as he looked at the little girl, a profound, incredibly gentle smile broke across his features. He was a father. The winter heir had finally come home.
His brother and sister-in-law were officially in federal custody, their assets frozen, their luxurious lives utterly destroyed by the full, terrifying might of the Sterling empire. They would never see the outside of a prison cell again. The vengeance was swift, absolute, and deeply satisfying. But the story was far from over.
Richard walked back into his glass-walled office, leaving Lucy to watch cartoons. He stood by the mahogany desk, staring at the tarnished rose gold locket and the nurse's diary. Edward and Camille had only paid to get rid of the baby. They genuinely believed Sarah had died of natural complications during the birth. But if Sarah had given the nurse the locket, she had faked her own death. She had willingly walked away from her billionaire husband and her newborn child. Why?
Richard realized with a sickening twist in his gut that Edward wasn't the real threat. Edward was just a greedy, pathetic pawn. Sarah had been running from something much bigger, something so terrifying that she had to erase her own existence to keep her family safe.
Suddenly, the secure, encrypted private phone on Richard’s desk began to ring. It was a line only three people in the entire world had the number to, and two of them were supposedly dead. Richard stared at the flashing light. The bright, cinematic morning glow illuminated his hardened, rugged features. He reached out slowly, his thick fingers grasping the heavy receiver. He brought it to his ear. He didn't speak.
For a long moment, there was only the sound of static on the encrypted line. Then, a soft, familiar intake of breath, followed by a voice that made the billionaire's heart completely stop.

“Richard,” the woman whispered, her American accent trembling with tears. “They found me. You have to protect her.”
The line went dead.
