Chapter 26 - The Laundry Room

Three years after the night I found Ione kneeling in dirty water, we renovated our laundry room.

Pipe problem.

New flooring.

Paint.

The hallway alcove remained.

Ione was ten.

She watched contractors.

One asked:

“Want old utility shelf?”

Ione looked at me.

“Can make reading nook?”

I almost said no.

Same place.

Her choice.

“Yes.”

We built a bench.

Cushions.

Lamp.

Books.

Not as trauma project.

She genuinely wanted it because it was near the dryer and warm in winter.

First night after completion, she brought blanket.

I froze.

“What?”

“Reading.”

“You’re sleeping upstairs.”

She rolled eyes.

“Obviously.”

She sat on bench.

Blanket over knees.

Read for forty minutes.

Then went to bed.

No one told her when.

No one made her earn it.

The place where a pillow had once meant punishment became somewhere she voluntarily sat because socks came out warm.

That was the climax.

Choice can alter a room without pretending the old thing never happened.
