Chapter 1

The first person Gabriele called was a doctor.
The second was the police.
That surprised Theresa.
She had spent decades inside a family where humiliation, threats, and violence were usually handled privately. She expected Gabriele to drag her into another room and issue one of those quiet warnings everyone in the Mazzaro organization understood.
Instead, he handed Nora to a bodyguard and said:
“Stay where she can see me.”
Then he waited for paramedics.
Nora had scraped one knee when Theresa shoved her inside the cage, but she had no serious physical injury. The damage was mostly fear. She cried whenever anyone moved toward the cage again.
Theresa had struck the back of her head when she fell beside the open metal door. The cut required several stitches but no surgery.
Detective Melissa Kane reviewed the home-security footage that evening.
Theresa pushed Nora into the cage.
Closed the door.
Mocked her.
Gabriele arrived.
Removed Nora.
Then, after Nora was already safe, Gabriele crossed the room and slapped Theresa.
Melissa asked him:
“Was Theresa attacking your daughter when you struck her?”
“No.”
“Was she attacking you?”
“No.”
“Then your conduct gets reviewed separately.”
Gabriele nodded.
“I understand.”
No claim that fatherhood made retaliation lawful.
Then Melissa interviewed Nora with a child specialist present.
“Why were you asking Grandma Theresa about shoes?”
“My school shoes have a hole.”
“Did Daddy say no?”
Nora shook her head.
“Mommy said Daddy already bought them.”
Gabriele looked toward the unopened shoe box lying in an evidence bag.
The correct size.
The exact pair Nora had apparently wanted.
He had never seen the box before.
Then Nora said something stranger.
“Grandma said Daddy didn’t pay for them because he doesn’t want to waste money on me.”
Gabriele’s expression changed.
He had authorized his assistant to buy Nora new school shoes three days earlier.
The purchase had been completed.
Someone had received the package.
Theresa.
So why tell Nora her father refused?
Before anyone could ask, Audrey called again from the hospital.
This time Gabriele took the call privately.
Her voice was weak.
“She showed me the cage.”
Gabriele went still.
“What?”
“Theresa video-called me.”
“When?”
“Ten minutes before you got there.”
Audrey began crying.
“She wanted me to see Nora inside it.”

That meant the cruelty had not merely been punishment.
It had been a message.
