Chapter 6

Audrey told Gabriele why Theresa had shown her the cage.

The video call lasted forty-eight seconds.

Theresa held the phone facing Nora.

The child was behind the bars crying.

Audrey screamed:

“Let her out!”

Theresa answered calmly.

“She needs discipline.”

“For shoes?”

“For entitlement.”

Audrey threatened to call police.

Theresa smiled.

“From an oncology floor?”

Then she moved closer to the phone.

“If you sign tomorrow, you’re choosing bankers over family.”

Audrey finally understood.

The cage was leverage.

Theresa wanted her to cancel the trust amendment.

Audrey refused.

Theresa’s last words before ending the call were:

“Then remember who will still be here when you’re gone.”

Audrey immediately tried reaching Gabriele.

That was why she sounded so desperate when his phone finally rang.

“Please… don’t let that woman lock our daughter in a cage!”

It was not a guess.

It was eyewitness knowledge.

The estate lawyer preserved Audrey’s account in a sworn statement while she was medically capable and mentally clear.

Hospital staff documented her condition.

No delirium.

No heavy sedation affecting orientation.

No question that she understood the trust amendment.

Theresa’s attorneys later suggested Audrey had been emotionally vulnerable.

True.

She was seriously ill.

Emotional vulnerability did not automatically eliminate legal capacity.

Two physicians confirmed she understood who she was, what she owned, who Nora was, and what changing trustees meant.

Audrey signed.

Beacon accepted appointment.

The amendment was witnessed and notarized according to the applicable formalities.

Theresa’s expected future control disappeared in less than twenty minutes.

When she learned, she did not scream.

She sent one text to Gabriele:

You let a dying woman dismantle this family.

He replied:

May you like

No. You put her daughter in a cage.

Then he blocked her.
