Chapter 5

Theresa did not want Audrey’s money.

Not directly.

That distinction mattered.

Investigators found no evidence she had been siphoning millions from Audrey’s trust.

There was no completed theft from Nora.

No secret Caribbean account.

No jewelry purchased with the child’s funds.

Theresa wanted something more familiar to people like her.

Control.

Whitmore-Mazzaro Holdings had recently become divided over its future.

Gabriele wanted to sell two underperforming properties, reduce leverage, and bring in professional outside directors.

Theresa considered that surrender.

She wanted the company to remain family-controlled.

Several older relatives supported her.

Younger shareholders increasingly supported Gabriele.

Audrey’s twenty-six percent voting block could determine which vision survived after her death.

Under the old trust:

Theresa would become trustee.

Subject to fiduciary law, yes.

Subject to court review, yes.

But she would still control how that block voted unless challenged.

Under the new trust:

Beacon Fiduciary would vote independently according to Nora’s interests and the trust terms.

Theresa would lose the largest source of leverage she expected to gain.

Then investigators found her messages to the company’s longtime counsel.

Theresa:

If Audrey passes before amendment, current trust controls?

Counsel:

Generally yes, subject to validity and any later instrument.

Theresa:

And trustee votes shares during Nora minority?

Counsel:

Within fiduciary duties and governing documents. Not as personal property.

Theresa:

I understand that.

She understood it very well.

Then another exchange with a family ally:

Gabriele thinks he can professionalize everything once Audrey is gone. He cannot if Nora’s block stays where it belongs.

Where it belongs.

Not with Nora.

With Theresa.

Then came the most disturbing line.

The child must trust me more than him before Audrey dies.

Suddenly the canceled coat, backpack, and shoes became something else.

May you like

Theresa was not merely humiliating Nora.

She was building emotional dependency.
