Chapter 22 - The House

People assumed I would sell.
Too many memories.
The stairs.
The foyer.
Margaret.
Claire.
But the house was also:
Noah's first Christmas.
Claire's terrible attempt at wallpaper.
Rosa's cooking.
My father's old study.
Amanda sleeping on the sofa after Claire died because I could not handle nighttime feedings alone.
I refused to let one event become the only meaning of a building.
We changed practical things.
Secure stair gates.
Improved lighting.
New non-slip runner.
Childproof hardware.
Margaret's bedroom became a guest room.
No dramatic demolition.
The staircase stayed.
The front door stayed.
Life continued around them.
