Chapter 8 - The Text Message

My attorney, Simon Reeves, asked:
“Has she threatened the child?”
“No.”
“Threatened to remove him?”
“Maybe.”
“Maybe doesn't help.”
He was right.
Then Margaret made it easier.
I told her she needed to move out.
Not immediately.
Thirty days.
I offered to pay for a hotel while she found a condominium.
She stared at me as though I had renounced citizenship.
“This is my home.”
“No. You live here.”
“Your father and I built this family.”
“This conversation isn't about Dad.”
“It is always about family.”
“Noah is family.”
She looked at me.
Then said:
“Biology isn't enough.”
The irony nearly made me laugh.
“You're his biological grandmother.”
“You know what I mean.”
Again.
That night she texted:
Either he goes to Claire's people or I do.
I replied:
You do.
Her answer came immediately.
May you like
If you won't remove him, I will.
That was the message Simon needed.
