Diane denied stealing.
Her attorney described the disputed payments as compensation for years of unpaid caregiving.
Some payments, in fairness, were legitimate.
Diane had bought groceries.
Paid utilities.
Driven Elena to medical appointments.
Managed paperwork.
Spent nights helping with newborn twins after Matthew died.
The forensic accountants separated those.
Elena insisted they do.
“I don’t want every kind thing she ever did rewritten as fraud.”
Daniel nodded.
That mattered.
Diane had helped her daughter.
She had also exploited that help.
Both could be true.
The clearest improper payments involved Morgan Recreation Holdings.
Sports travel.
Memberships.
Personal purchases.
Duplicated reimbursements.
Charges made when Diane was not caring for the children at all.
The total under serious dispute exceeded three hundred thousand dollars.
Not nineteen million.
Not some impossible fortune.
Enough.
The court ordered Diane to provide full records.
She resisted.
Then complied.
Her attorney began negotiating repayment.
Separate investigators reviewed whether false representations used to obtain reimbursement warranted criminal charges.
Elena did not control that decision.
She stopped trying to.
The child-safety investigation was more emotionally difficult.
Diane claimed Leo crawled under her foot and she reacted instinctively.
The home layout and Elena’s account contradicted parts of that story.
But Leo was one.
He could not testify meaningfully.
There was no need to turn him into evidence beyond what doctors documented.
A protective order barred Diane from unsupervised contact with either twin.
Elena requested no visits at all for now.
Diane sent a message through counsel.
You are keeping my grandchildren from me over one bad second.
Elena asked Daniel to respond.
He refused.
“You respond if you want.”
Elena looked at him.
“You’re my lawyer.”
“Not your voice.”
She understood.
