Chapter 12

Elena’s life changed rapidly once money stopped being filtered through Diane.

Not extravagantly.

Practically.

A physical therapist came to the house six days a week.

A professional nanny covered mornings.

A second caregiver helped evenings during Elena’s rehabilitation.

Leo and Maya kept their familiar home.

The beige carpet.

Brown sofa.

White front door.

Playpen.

Toys.

Nothing became a mansion fantasy.

Elena did not need a new life.

She needed enough support to live the one she already had.

Her recovery improved.

First she stood for ten seconds with assistance.

Then thirty.

Then crossed the living room using a walker.

The brace remained.

Pain remained.

Progress came anyway.

Hawthorne Trust formally recognized Elena and the twins as beneficiaries.

Daniel arranged independent financial education before Elena made any major decisions.

She hated the first meeting.

Numbers exhausted her.

Then she realized something.

Diane had been partly right about one thing.

Elena did dislike financial administration.

That did not mean she was incapable.

It meant she needed professionals who explained instead of controlled.

She appointed an independent fiduciary adviser.

Not Daniel.

He specifically declined.

“You need someone whose job isn’t also defending you in a family dispute.”

Elena smiled.

“You’ve become annoyingly ethical.”

“Expensive too.”

For the first time in weeks, she laughed.

Then came a harder question.

What to do with Diane financially.

Matthew’s estate had included a modest annual family-support gift for Diane.

Not a legal entitlement.

A discretionary benefit.

Elena could stop it.

Daniel asked whether she wanted to.

“Yes.”

Then she paused.

“Wait.”

He waited.

Diane was still Elena’s mother.

Ending access to Elena’s accounts was necessary.

Stopping discretionary gifts felt different.

More personal.

More like revenge.

Elena eventually said:

“Freeze it until the accounting is finished.”

Not forever.

Not mercy either.

Accountability first.

The decision surprised Daniel.

May you like

It surprised Elena too.

She was beginning to discover that control and revenge were not the same thing.
