Chapter 11

Genevieve was removed from the foundation before any criminal trial began.

Not because Rowan ordered it.

The independent board voted.

Unanimously.

Her financial authority was suspended.

Her access credentials were revoked.

Her title disappeared from the website.

For a woman who had built her adult identity around being Mrs. Mercer of the Mercer Family Foundation, the administrative details hurt almost as much as the legal investigation.

Audrey was dismissed.

She later cooperated extensively.

Her lawyer negotiated with prosecutors.

No outcome was promised in advance.

The charges separated into different categories.

The staircase assault.

The attempted evidence planting.

Document fabrication.

Unauthorized computer access.

Foundation fraud.

Related-party concealment.

Not every ugly fact became a criminal charge.

That mattered.

Some conduct belonged in civil court.

Some in employment decisions.

Some in governance reform.

Some in the criminal system.

Rowan’s slap remained separate.

Police had the footage.

So did Genevieve’s attorney.

Rowan did not claim self-defense.

Genevieve was not attacking him when he struck her.

He accepted responsibility under a negotiated misdemeanor disposition involving counseling, community service, and a period of court supervision.

One of his executives called it absurd.

“She almost threw your pregnant wife down stairs.”

Rowan looked at him.

“That’s her case.”

“And yours?”

“I hit her after Isolde was safe.”

The executive shook his head.

“You’re really going to let that sit on you?”

“It is on me.”

There was nothing else to say.

Isolde heard about the conversation later.

That night she sat beside Rowan in the unfinished nursery.

“You didn’t have to say that to him.”

“Yes, I did.”

“Why?”

“Because people around me are too used to deciding whatever I do must have been necessary.”

Isolde looked at him.

“And?”

“And that is dangerous.”

Their daughter shifted beneath Isolde’s hand.

Rowan placed his palm carefully against her stomach.

The baby kicked.

For a moment neither talked about Genevieve.

Then Isolde said:

“I was scared of you that day.”

Rowan looked up sharply.

“After the slap?”

“Yes.”

Not scared he would hit her.

Scared of how quickly the entire room changed when he became angry.

How people stopped moving.

How security waited for his command.

How one man’s rage could become everyone else’s instruction.

Rowan listened.

Did not defend himself.

That was the beginning of a different investigation.

One with no accountants.
