Chapter 14

The legal resolutions came over the following year.

Audrey cooperated early.

She admitted creating the forged materials, entering Isolde’s study, and participating in the attempted evidence replacement.

Her cooperation reduced her sentence.

It did not erase it.

She also lost any future role in fiduciary or charitable administration.

Adrian Bell settled civil claims, repaid substantial funds, and was barred from Mercer Foundation contracting.

Genevieve’s case was more serious.

The financial misconduct.

The forged evidence scheme.

The attempted planting of documents.

The assault on Isolde.

The court treated the staircase conduct particularly seriously because Genevieve knowingly used force against a woman eight months pregnant near a dangerous drop.

The final resolution included incarceration, restitution, supervised release, and permanent restrictions on serving as an officer, trustee, or fiduciary of charitable entities.

Not every charge prosecutors initially investigated survived.

The offenses they could prove did.

Rowan did not attend sentencing to watch her receive punishment.

He attended because he was a victim, a witness, and her son.

All three could be true.

Genevieve looked toward him once before she was taken away.

Rowan did not look away.

He also did not approach.

Isolde stayed home with their daughter.

By then, Amelia Mercer was seven months old.

Healthy.

Curious.

Obsessed with pulling earrings.

Isolde had nearly named her something else because Genevieve had once made a dismissive comment about the name Amelia.

Then she changed her mind.

“I’m not letting your mother own names now.”

Rowan agreed.

Their marriage had survived.

Not automatically.

Rowan completed every legal counseling requirement and continued privately afterward.

He worked specifically on anger, control, and the effect his authority had on rooms before he ever raised his voice.

Isolde worked on something different.

Telling Rowan frightening truths before she had perfected the evidence.

They developed one rule.

Bad news did not become safer by becoming older.

It helped.

By Amelia’s first birthday, Isolde could tell Rowan something he had wanted to hear for a long time.

“I trust you when you’re angry now.”

He looked at her.

“Completely?”

“Yes.”

She smiled slightly.

“Unfortunately.”

May you like

That question was resolved.

Another remained.
