Chapter 5 - Caught in the Crosshairs

The nursery door swung open with a sharp, heavy gust of air.
Lorenzo Rossi stepped into the room, flanked by two imposing guards carrying concealed firearms. His expression was dark, his jaw tight with the agonizing frustration of a father watching his son slip away. He had come back to check the late-night vitals himself.
He stopped dead in his tracks.
The guards instantly shifted, their hands moving instinctively toward their holsters, but Lorenzo raised a single, commanding hand, freezing them instantly in place.
The atmosphere in the room turned to ice.
Lorenzo stared across the dim room. There, sitting in his wife’s armchair, was one of his domestic staff—the quiet maid with the dark hair. Her uniform was unbuttoned, and held securely in her arms was his son.
Leo wasn't crying. He wasn't kicking. He was feeding calmly, deeply, his small body resting peacefully against her chest.
Lorenzo’s dark eyes flared with an immediate, terrifying flash of anger. How dare an unauthorized servant touch his heir? How dare she cross the line into his personal sanctuary?
He took a slow, menacing step forward, his shadow stretching across the hardwood floor like a predator stalking its prey.
"What do you think you are doing?" his voice thundered in a low, dangerous whisper that rattled the glass in the windows.
Hunter gasped, her head snapping up in sheer terror. She tried to cover herself, pulling the baby closer, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. "I—I'm sorry, sir! He was crying, he was so weak—"
Lorenzo reached the chair in three long strides, his muscular frame towering over her. He raised his hand, reaching out to rip his child away from this stranger.
But as his eyes tracked down to where Hunter’s arm supported Leo's head, the sleeve of her cream uniform rode up.
Lorenzo froze mid-motion.

There, wrapped snugly around her pale, delicate wrist, was a stark white band. A maternity hospital bracelet.
The red, furious glare in Lorenzo’s eyes vanished, replaced by an unsettling, stunned stillness.
