Chapter 9 - The Broken Mirror

Downstairs in Lorenzo's private study, the air was thick with the scent of leather, cigar smoke, and impending violence.
Dr. Nathan Cole sat in a leather armchair, flanked by two of Lorenzo's most brutal enforcers. His lab coat was gone, his tie loosened. He was sweating despite the cool temperature of the room.
The heavy mahogany door creaked open, and Lorenzo walked in. He didn't say a word. He walked to his desk, poured himself a fresh glass of bourbon, and sat down.
"Lorenzo, this is insane," Nathan pleaded, trying to maintain his dignity. "I have served your family with absolute loyalty! I saved your life when the Moretti family shot you three years ago! You're letting the wild fabrications of a grieving, hysterical maid poison your mind!"
Lorenzo took a slow sip of his drink. "Where is Isabella’s original bloodwork from the night she gave birth, Nathan?"
Nathan blinked, momentarily caught off guard. "It's... it's in the medical vault at St. Jude's."
"I sent Marco to the vault an hour ago," Lorenzo said coldly, setting his glass down with a quiet clink. "The vault was completely empty. Cleaned out. Every file related to Isabella Rossi and Hunter Bennett was shredded."
Nathan’s face turned gray. "Lorenzo, listen to me—"
"No, you listen to me," Lorenzo interrupted, leaning forward, his massive frame radiating lethal intent. "My son was dying because his body rejected synthetic formula. But he didn't just reject formula, did he? His body was rejecting the biological markers of a mother he didn't recognize."
Nathan opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out.
"A mother's milk carries antibodies specific to her child," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping into a dangerous whisper. "I may be a mob boss, Nathan, but I am not an idiot. I ran a private DNA swab thirty minutes ago using the rapid kit in your own medical bay. I tested Leo's blood against Hunter Bennett's."
The room fell dead silent. Even the two guards held their breath.

Nathan slumped back in his chair, all the air rushing out of his lungs. His confident facade crumpled completely. "Lorenzo... you don't understand the forces that were involved..."
Lorenzo stood up slowly, his eyes burning with a dark, terrifying flame. "Where is my real son, Nathan?"
