Chapter 8 - Twisted Ties

By three o'clock in the morning, the atmosphere inside the Rossi estate was stretched to a breaking point.

Hunter sat in the master guest suite on the second floor. She had refused to let go of Leo, and strangely, Lorenzo hadn't forced her to. The baby was tucked securely against her side, breathing in deep, healthy rhythms that the medical staff had thought impossible hours ago.

The door opened, and Lorenzo walked in alone. He had removed his suit jacket, rolling up his dark dress shirt sleeves to reveal the intricate, dark tattoos covering his forearms. He carried a heavy glass of whiskey, but he hadn't touched a drop.

He stood at the foot of the massive bed, looking down at Hunter and the child.

"He hasn't slept like that since the day he was born," Lorenzo said, his deep voice unusually quiet.

"He was starving, Mr. Rossi," Hunter said softly, keeping her eyes lowered. "And he needed warmth. Machines can't give a baby that."

Lorenzo walked to the window, staring out into the dark Long Island estate. "My wife, Isabella, died three hours after Leo was born. Uncontrollable hemorrhage, they told me. Nathan was the one who signed her death certificate. He’s been my family's doctor for a decade."

Hunter remained silent, gentle fingers tracing the edge of Leo's soft blanket.

"I had my men pull the archived security footage from St. Jude’s Hospital thirty minutes ago," Lorenzo continued, his voice dropping into a chilling tone. "The hospital's off-site server was mysteriously wiped three weeks ago. But my IT team managed to recover a single hour of footage from the third-floor corridor on the night of October 14."

Hunter held her breath. "What did it show?"

Lorenzo turned around, his dark eyes fixated on her with intense scrutiny. "It shows Dr. Nathan Cole carrying a blue blanket out of the emergency delivery ward—your ward—and walking directly into the VIP surgical wing."

Hunter’s heart stopped. "What... what are you saying?"

"I’m saying," Lorenzo whispered, walking toward the bed until he was standing directly over her, "that the timeline Nathan gave me was a lie. And my wife’s medical records from that night have been altered."

Hunter looked down at the baby sleeping beside her. Her mind raced wildly, piecing together the terrifying implications. The strange, instant bond. The baby's refusal to take any food other than hers. The way Nathan dropped his tablet the moment he saw her face.

"My baby didn't die, did he?" Hunter whispered, a terrible, hopeful sob tearing through her throat.

"I don't know yet," Lorenzo replied, his jaw clenched tightly. "But if someone tampered with my family... they won't live to see the sunrise."
