Chapter 4

The living room fell into a heavy, suffocating silence. The soft children's song playing from the radio seemed miles away as Ethan remained frozen on one knee. His eyes shifted back and forth between his twin sons, who were clinging happily to Lena's apron, and the young nanny herself, who sat trembling under his intense, unblinking gaze.
"Mr... Mr. Caldwell," Lena stammered, her gentle voice shaking as she instinctively tightened her arms around the twins, shielding them with her delicate frame. "I... I thought you left for the airport. I didn't hear your car..."
Ethan slowly stood up to his full, imposing height. The shock in his face gradually gave way to a deep, intense confusion. He took two slow steps forward, his polished black leather shoes sinking silently into the plush carpet.
"They called you Mama," Ethan said, his deep baritone rough and uneven. It wasn't an accusation; it was a statement of sheer bewilderment.
"I'm so sorry, sir!" Lena gasped, her blue eyes brimming with frightened tears as she looked up at him. "I never asked them to call me that, I swear! They... they started saying it last week when I was reading them to sleep. I tried to correct them, but they're so little, and they missed their mother so much... Please don't fire me, Mr. Caldwell! I love these boys with all my heart!"
Ethan stared down at her, taking in her trembling hands, her flushed rosy cheeks, and the absolute sincerity burning in her eyes. He looked at Nico and Noah, who were comfortably resting their golden heads against her shoulders, entirely at peace.
Margaret’s vicious warnings echoed in his mind: “She locks those poor boys in their cribs... She yells at them... She is cruel.”
Every word Margaret had spoken was an absolute, deliberate lie.
Ethan’s jaw tightened, a cold, terrifying realization dawning in his mind. He was being manipulated. Someone inside his own home had lied to him, trying to force him to expel the one person who brought true happiness and safety to his sons.
Suddenly, little Nico wriggled out of Lena’s arms. He stood up on his wobbly legs in his turquoise teddy-bear pajamas, taking three cautious steps toward the doorway. He stopped, pointing his tiny, chubby finger directly down the long hallway toward the closed door of Margaret’s private office.
Nico’s cheerful little face twisted into a sudden, genuine expression of fear. His rosy cheeks flushed red, his lips trembling as he pointed frantically.
"Bad Nana!" Nico cried out in a frightened, high-pitched voice. "Bad Nana!"
Beside him, Noah immediately burst into tears at the mention of the name, scrambling behind Lena’s yellow dress and hiding his face in her lap, shuddering with real terror.
Lena quickly pulled Noah close, stroking his blonde hair softly while looking up at Ethan with a pained, hesitant expression. "Mr. Caldwell... the boys are terrified of Margaret. Whenever you leave, she comes into the nursery and screams at them for making noise. She... she threatens to lock them in the cellar if they don't stay quiet."
Ethan felt a dark, icy chill settle deep into his bones. His piercing eyes locked onto the hallway where Margaret’s office sat. The black ink across his muscular forearms flexed as his fists clenched tightly at his sides.
"Marco," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a register so cold and lethal that even the air in the room felt heavy.
"Sir," Marco responded, stepping into the room, his rugged face grim.
"Lock down the perimeter," Ethan commanded softly. "Nobody leaves this estate."
Before Marco could move, a sharp, metallic CLICK echoed from down the corridor.
The heavy oak door of Margaret’s private office slowly swung open. Margaret stepped out into the grand hallway, her dark-gray housekeeping uniform pristine, her blonde-gray hair perfectly styled. She stopped ten feet away, looking directly at Ethan, Lena, and the terrified twins.

There was no surprise on Margaret's face. There was no panic, no attempt to make excuses. Instead, her cold, calculating eyes narrowed, and her lips slowly curled into a chilling, unnaturally confident smile.
"You weren't supposed to come back, Ethan," Margaret said, her voice unnaturally calm and smooth, echoing through the silent mansion.
