Chapter 9

Two weeks had passed since the violent storm that had threatened the Caldwell estate. The autumn weather in Washington, D.C., had cleared into crisp, brilliant sunny days that painted the estate gardens in rich shades of amber, crimson, and gold.

The atmosphere within the limestone mansion had transformed entirely. The oppressive, cold silence enforced by Margaret for years was gone, replaced by the lighthearted sound of children's laughter, warm meals, and open doors. The household security had been completely overhauled by Marco, replacing every compromised staff member with fiercely loyal, vetted guards who treated the family with genuine respect.

In the sunlit nursery on the second floor, Lena stood near the cribs, folding soft turquoise blankets. She wore a simple pale-yellow sundress today, her long golden-blonde hair flowing freely over her shoulders, held back by a delicate ribbon. Her rosy cheeks glowed under the warm afternoon sun.

The door opened softly, and Ethan walked into the room. He was dressed casually in a dark fitted sweater and tailored trousers, his thick dark wavy hair neat, his short beard trimmed. The heavy, dark weight that had shadowed his piercing eyes for years seemed to have lifted, leaving behind a confident, relaxed warmth.

"They're sleeping," Lena whispered with a sweet smile, pointing toward the two cribs where Nico and Noah lay fast asleep, holding their matching teddy bear toys.

Ethan walked quietly across the room, stopping beside her. He looked down at his sons, their round rosy cheeks rising and falling in peaceful, steady breaths.

"I used to dread coming home to this house," Ethan admitted softly, his deep voice barely above a whisper as he turned to face Lena. "After my wife passed, every room felt like a vault. I thought the only way to protect my boys was to build higher walls and become more ruthless."

Lena looked up at him, her expressive blue eyes filled with soft understanding. "You were grieving, Ethan. You were trying to keep them safe the only way you knew how."

"I was blind," Ethan corrected gently, reaching out his large, tattooed hand and resting his fingers against hers. "I brought you into this house to care for them, but you ended up saving all of us. You showed my boys what real love feels like. You showed me what this house was missing."

Lena felt her heart flutter in her chest as his warm, muscular hand enveloped hers. She didn't pull away. Instead, she stepped a fraction closer, looking up into the rugged, handsome face of the man who had become her protector.

"I didn't do it alone," Lena whispered softly. "You built a safe world for them, Ethan. I just helped fill it with light."

Ethan looked down at her delicate features, her soft lips, and the genuine affection shining in her eyes. For two years, he had closed his heart to the world, believing that love was a vulnerability a Mafia boss could not afford. But looking at Lena, he realized that she wasn't his weakness—she was his ultimate strength.

"Stay with us, Lena," Ethan asked, his voice rough with deep, unyielding emotion. "Not as an employee. Not because of a contract. Stay because you belong here. With me. With our boys."

Lena’s breath caught in her throat. A radiant, beautiful smile spread across her face, dimpling her rosy cheeks. "I'm not going anywhere, Ethan. I belong right here."
