Chapter 12

Benedict and Dulcie had to rebuild too.

His daughter was angry with him.

Not Ramona.

Him.

“Why did you take me from Mom?”

“I didn’t take you from her.”

“Yes, you did.”

He could have explained the custody order.

The audit.

The missed school.

The party plan.

Instead he said:

“It feels that way.”

Dulcie glared.

“You wanted this.”

“I wanted more school-week time.”

“So yes.”

Benedict nodded.

“Yes.”

She began crying.

“I told the truth and Mom got in trouble.”

There it was.

The burden nobody had intended but everyone had created.

Benedict crouched.

“Your mother got in trouble because of choices adults made.”

“But I told.”

“You told what happened.”

“If I didn’t—”

“No.”

His voice stayed gentle.

“That sentence stops there.”

Dulcie looked at him.

“You are not responsible for protecting your mother from facts.”

It took months before she believed him.

Ainsley never asked Dulcie for details.

Never thanked her for exposing Ramona.

Never called her brave in a way that made truth-telling become another performance.

She simply treated her like a child.

That helped.

Nell was more complicated.

For a while she did not want Dulcie in the house.

Not because Dulcie had cut her hair.

Because Dulcie was Ramona’s daughter.

Children sometimes attach fear to the nearest symbol.

Ainsley did not force reconciliation.

Benedict did not say:

She’s your sister.

They used therapy.

Short shared activities.

No sleepovers at first.

Then ice cream.

A movie.

One afternoon, Dulcie brought Nell a new ribbon.

Nell did not wear it.

But she kept it.

That was enough.

Meanwhile, Ainsley completed every requirement of diversion.

Community service.

Counseling.

No further incidents.

She continued therapy voluntarily.

Not because she feared she was violent.

Because she never wanted Ramona’s ability to provoke her to remain part of Ramona’s power.

Benedict changed too.

He reduced travel.

Hired a professional family-business manager for Dulcie’s commercial matters.

Stopped treating control as protection.

The household became quieter.

May you like

Not perfect.

Quieter.
