Chapter 6

The family office tried to minimize the scandal.

Its first statement described the staircase incident as:

A private family medical emergency during a gathering.

Adeline’s attorney objected immediately.

So did Detective Ellison.

There was nothing private about an assault witnessed by thirty people and captured on video.

The statement was withdrawn.

Then the trust’s outside counsel, Martin Vale, disclosed something Rocco did not know.

Three weeks before the dinner, Seraphine asked whether the trust protector could certify Rocco unfit to manage legacy assets due to “criminal entanglement and impending reputational danger.”

Martin asked for evidence.

Seraphine provided news articles and old rumors.

Some were true.

But the timing mattered.

If Rocco were removed before the baby’s birth and Adeline were medically incapacitated or discredited, Seraphine could argue she was the only family member capable of stabilizing the estate until the corporate trustee review.

Martin refused to proceed.

Then Seraphine asked a different lawyer.

That lawyer drafted but never filed a petition.

The petition claimed:

Rocco’s marriage was unstable.

Adeline was “emotionally overwhelmed.”

The unborn child’s status remained legally uncertain.

Emergency family management was needed to protect assets.

The document was dated the morning of the inheritance dinner.

That was another clue.

Seraphine had a legal story ready before the fall.

Not after.

She did not simply lose control on the staircase.

She had prepared to benefit from whatever chaos followed.
