Chapter 9

The audit found the real hole.
Seraphine had not stolen a few million.
She had pledged future Bellandi trust distributions and management fees to cover losses from a failed waterfront redevelopment project.
The project was supposed to turn warehouses into luxury apartments.
Permits stalled.
Environmental problems multiplied.
Investors demanded cash.
Seraphine concealed the losses by moving money through consulting entities, foundation-event advances, and short-term loans.
She intended the $38 million bridge loan to keep everything alive.
But the lender required assurance that trust control would remain stable.
A birth-triggered transfer to an independent trustee would freeze the structure.
The trustee would review pledges, conflicts, and related-party transactions.
The bridge loan would die.
The concealment would surface.
That explained the timing.
Then came a more disturbing document.
A draft medical declaration prepared for Seraphine’s lawyer.
It did not mention a shove.
It described Adeline as suffering a stress-related fall after “family conflict caused by Rocco’s volatile conduct.”
The declaration left blank spaces for the doctor’s observations.
It had been created the morning before the dinner.
Seraphine had expected a medical event.
She had expected to blame Rocco.
And she had expected to use that event to delay the birth-triggered transfer.
Then Detective Ellison found the message that tied it together:
No live heir certification, no audit. No audit, no lender problem.
Seraphine sent it to herself in an encrypted note app, likely as a reminder for a call.

It was not poetry.
It was motive.
