Chapter 5 - Anna Knew Part of It

Anna had known Genevieve was coding some of Winnie’s purchases oddly.

Not the full scheme.

I found an email from fourteen months earlier.

Anna to Genevieve:

Please stop putting Winnie under First Step. We can pay for her clothes. The point of the program is children whose families actually need assistance.

Genevieve:

You said you wanted her to understand privilege.

Anna:

Understanding privilege does not mean pretending she is poor.

Then:

And stop returning things I buy her because you think they look “cheap.” She is three.

I closed laptop.

Another email.

Genevieve:

You always dress her like she’s going to a public library craft hour.

Anna:

Because sometimes she is.

Then:

She is a child, Gen. Not an extension of the Sloan name.

There.

Old tension.

Anna came from a middle-income family.

Public school.

State university.

Worked in education nonprofits before marrying me.

Genevieve had always liked her publicly.

Privately:

class friction.

Anna hated luxury as identity.

Genevieve believed presentation mattered.

Neither automatically wrong.

Then Anna became sick.

Cancer changed the power balance.

Genevieve began helping more with Winnie.

Anna needed it.

That gave my sister access.

Receipts.

Closet.

School pickups.

First Step.

The earliest questionable transaction occurred during Anna’s final chemotherapy cycle.

A winter coat Anna selected for Winnie.

Genevieve picked it up from store.

Family office reimbursed.

Then Genevieve returned coat to stock.

Bought a cheaper one from another retailer with her personal card?

Winnie remembered a gray coat.

Cost:

$42.

The Bell & Finch coat billed:

$480.

Difference remained in store.

That was not about teaching humility.

It was cash.

But why would a boutique owner risk family trust for $438?

Because Bell & Finch had problems.

Serious ones.

And Genevieve had begun treating every available dollar as bridge financing.

Including money associated with her niece.
