Chapter 11

Fairmont’s board suspended Dr. Hale immediately.

Two retired executives retained criminal counsel.

State regulators opened an investigation.

So did federal authorities reviewing whether billing and consent representations crossed into fraud.

Ryan did not celebrate.

He was learning how slowly real accountability moved.

Fairmont remained open under temporary outside supervision.

Closing immediately would have harmed current patients who had embryos, medication cycles, and pregnancies underway.

That distinction mattered.

The clinic was not a building that could be dramatically padlocked without consequences.

Independent administrators took over donor records.

A hotline was created for potentially affected families.

Genetic counseling was offered.

The boy conceived from Ryan’s fourth post-withdrawal cycle became the hardest issue.

His parents received notice that the donor used in their treatment did not match their consent records.

They asked for the corrected medical profile.

They did not request Ryan’s name.

Ryan respected that.

He did not search them.

He did not ask Rebecca for their address.

He did not decide biology gave him a right to enter their lives.

Natalie noticed.

“You want to know.”

“Yes.”

“But you’re not going to.”

“No.”

She nodded.

“Good.”

That word meant more coming from her.

Mara’s situation was different.

Natalie wanted Ryan involved.

Carefully.

They entered a voluntary parenting arrangement before any court forced one.

No instant joint custody.

No pretending Ryan could recover five years by taking half the week.

He began with two afternoons.

Then Saturdays.

Natalie remained the primary parent while everyone adjusted.

Ryan paid appropriate support openly.

No secret arrangement.

No confidentiality condition.

No attempt to purchase gratitude.

Mara stopped calling him Daddy after the first week.

That surprised him.

She started calling him Ryan.

Dr. Lin said it was healthy.

“She used Daddy before she knew you.”

Ryan nodded.

“Now she’s deciding what the word means.”

May you like

He found that painful.

He also understood it was hers.
