Chapter 14

The house changed too.

Ryan hired a building inspector to examine every old service cavity.

Not because hidden children were likely to appear again.

Because the idea that a three-year-old could discover a person living behind a wall before the adults did bothered him deeply.

The loose exterior panel was replaced.

The old wall cavity became open shelving accessible from the hallway.

No dark space.

No removable panel.

Lily complained that the sandwiches had nowhere mysterious to go now.

Ryan told her sandwiches were not supposed to be mysterious.

She disagreed.

Emily remained in the house.

But the marriage was different.

Separate bedrooms became permanent for several months.

Counseling continued.

She stopped asking Ryan when he would “move past it.”

That helped.

Ryan stopped using Mara’s existence as a weapon in unrelated arguments.

That helped too.

Trust could not grow if both people used the worst event as ammunition.

Natalie eventually allowed Mara to spend one afternoon at Ryan and Emily’s house without her.

Not overnight.

Not yet.

Emily was nervous.

She did not overcompensate.

She did not buy gifts.

She did not attempt to become a second mother.

She made grilled cheese.

Mara disliked the crust.

Emily cut it off.

That was the entire interaction.

Lily dragged Mara upstairs to show her a collection of plastic horses.

Later Ryan found them both asleep on the rug.

For a few minutes he simply stood in the doorway.

Two daughters.

One expected.

One not.

Neither more legitimate than the other.

Emily came up behind him.

She stopped several feet away.

Ryan glanced toward her.

“You okay?”

She nodded.

Then corrected herself.

“No.”

He almost smiled.

“That’s becoming popular around here.”

Emily looked at the girls.

“I’m trying.”

“I know.”

May you like

It was not forgiveness.

But it was no longer nothing.
