Chapter 10

The major twist was not that Melisande wanted to send Bastian and Ophelia to boarding school.

It was why she needed both children there at the same time.

The independent investigators reconstructed the plan from the trust documents, Wycliffe correspondence, developer emails, household records, and Melisande’s own notes.

Caroline’s trust prevented Leander from selling the current home without trustee approval.

That approval was difficult while the house remained the children’s established primary residence and carried obvious emotional importance after their mother’s death.

Melisande could not change the trust.

Could not remove Caroline’s ownership interest.

Could not force Leander to sell.

So she began trying to change the facts around the house.

If both children moved into residential education for a significant period, Melisande intended to argue that the current estate no longer served their daily housing needs.

She had already drafted language for the trustee:

The children now benefit from structured residential education, while the current property has become physically and emotionally destabilizing for them.

Physically destabilizing.

That was why the staircase mattered.

She needed more than difficult behavior.

She needed the house itself to appear unsuitable.

An environment associated with dangerous incidents.

The children repeatedly losing control near stairs.

A large property difficult to supervise.

A widowed father supposedly struggling to manage them.

Then the proposed sale could be presented not as Melisande wanting Caroline’s house gone.

It could be presented as a child-safety decision.

The new residence would be purchased after Leander and Melisande married.

She wanted it jointly structured.

She would design it.

She would earn legitimate consulting income through the developer.

But money was only part of it.

The deeper motive was control over the shape of the family.

The existing house belonged symbolically and legally to Caroline’s children.

Every major change required considering Bastian and Ophelia.

In the new house Melisande imagined, she would finally become the woman who defined the home.

The children would return from residential school for holidays and summers.

Present.

But no longer central.

The manufactured incidents were how she planned to get there.

Bastian had been first.

Melisande provoked him near the stairs, bumped him when he resisted, then documented the near fall as evidence of dangerous behavior.

When that failed to create enough urgency, she escalated with Ophelia.

She withheld Caroline’s belongings.

Turned grief into defiance.

Created confrontations near the staircase.

Switched off cameras whenever her own conduct risked appearing.

Then, on the day Leander arrived early, Ophelia refused to back down.

Melisande shoved her.

That was not a carefully planned attempt to seriously injure the child.

It was an escalation born from frustration and entitlement.

But if Leander had not caught Ophelia, the consequences could have been catastrophic.

The three earlier clues now fit.

Melisande documented staircase danger before either child had actually demonstrated a real staircase problem.

She researched residential placement for both children while simultaneously studying the trust’s house-sale provisions.

And she privately discussed selling the home as dependent on the children’s “residential transition.”

Bastian’s final sentence on the staircase had exposed the entire architecture.

She tried it with me first.

Ophelia had not been singled out because Melisande hated one little girl.

Both children were obstacles to the future Melisande wanted.

Leander stared at the reconstruction.

Then at the concept drawing of the new house.

Two small bedrooms.

Far down a side hallway.

He asked:

“Did she ever actually intend for them to live with us again?”

Grant answered carefully.

“We can’t know her private intentions beyond the documents.”

Leander looked at the plans.

“No.”

He understood enough.

May you like

Melisande had not been trying to join his family.

She had been trying to redesign it until the parts inherited from Caroline became easier to move out of the way.
