Chapter 11

The wedding was canceled formally.
No reconsideration.
No counseling period.
No public statement blaming the children.
Leander told Bastian and Ophelia himself.
“I’m not marrying Melisande.”
Ophelia looked relieved.
Bastian asked:
“Because of us?”
Leander answered immediately.
“Because of what she did.”
That distinction mattered.
Bastian looked down.
“She’s going to hate us.”
“That is her responsibility.”
“Did we ruin your wedding?”
“No.”
Leander sat between them.
“She made choices. I made choices. You two told the truth.”
Ophelia asked:
“Are you sad?”
Leander considered lying.
Then didn’t.
“Yes.”
She looked surprised.
“You can be sad when somebody did something bad?”
“Yes.”
“Do you still love her?”
Leander took longer.
“Some feelings don’t disappear as fast as decisions.”
Bastian seemed to understand that more than Ophelia did.
The legal process moved separately.
Melisande faced investigation for the suspected forged parental support letter and trust submissions.
The children’s trustee sought recovery of consulting and evaluation expenses that had been based on misleading information.
The security access was reviewed.
Wycliffe cooperated fully and confirmed it had never agreed to admit either child without proper evaluation.
The developer withdrew from further discussions.
No home sale.
No new residence.
No transaction.
Leander’s own slap remained part of the record.
He accepted responsibility.
He completed counseling and a misdemeanor resolution rather than pretending protecting Ophelia gave him unlimited permission to strike someone.
When Bastian heard about the counseling, he looked confused.
“But she pushed Ophelia.”
“She did.”
“So why are you in trouble?”
Leander looked at him.
“Because two wrong things can happen in the same minute.”
Bastian thought about that.
May you like
Then nodded.
Leander hoped the lesson lasted longer than the scandal.
