Chapter 1

Nora opened the second velvet box with June pressed tightly against her chest.

Inside lay another black leather collar.

Larger.

Adult-sized.

A small silver tag hung from the buckle.

MAMA.

Nobody laughed this time.

Nora looked at Margaret first.

Then Wesley.

“What exactly was supposed to happen tonight?”

Margaret recovered quickly. “It was a matching joke.”

“A collar for my newborn and one for me.”

“You have no sense of humor anymore.”

Nora’s expression hardened. “I had a baby five weeks ago. I didn’t lose my ability to recognize humiliation.”

Wesley finally stepped forward.

“Nora, let’s go upstairs and talk.”

She looked at him.

“You stood there.”

“I was shocked.”

“You weren’t shocked when your mother opened the first box.”

Wesley said nothing.

That silence mattered.

Nora picked up the diaper bag with one hand and walked toward the front hall.

Margaret followed.

“You are not taking June out of this house because you can’t handle a joke.”

Nora stopped.

“This is my child.”

“She is Wesley’s child too.”

“Then he should have acted like her father.”

Wesley flinched.

One of the guests, Caroline Mercer, quietly lifted her phone.

She had been recording parts of the welcome party because she was June’s godmother and wanted clips for a private family album.

Margaret noticed.

“Turn that off.”

Caroline did not.

Nora looked at her.

“Did you get what happened?”

“Yes.”

“Save it.”

Margaret’s voice sharpened. “Nobody is sending videos of this family anywhere.”

Nora almost laughed.

“There it is.”

“What?”

“The part where this stops being a joke and becomes something you need controlled.”

She left.

Wesley followed her to the driveway.

“Nora, please.”

She put June carefully into the infant seat.

Then turned.

“Did you know about the collars?”

Wesley looked down.

“One.”

Her stomach dropped.

“Which one?”

He hesitated too long.

“The baby one.”

“You knew your mother planned to put a dog collar on our five-week-old child?”

“She said it was a gag gift.”

“And you let her.”

“I told her it was stupid.”

“That isn’t the same as stopping her.”

“Nora—”

“Did you know there was one for me?”

“No.”

She studied his face.

He looked frightened.

Not surprised.

She closed the car door.

“Tonight you sleep somewhere else.”

His expression changed.

“You can’t just—”

“I can decide who sleeps beside me tonight.”

Then she drove June to her sister’s house.

Before leaving the property, she called her pediatrician.

Then an attorney.

And finally the police non-emergency line.

She reported exactly what had happened.

Including the fact that she slapped Margaret.

No editing.

May you like

No heroic version.

If there was going to be a record, Nora wanted the whole record.
