Chapter 7

Margaret’s crisis plan had two tracks.

Elena found them in a folder her assistant turned over under subpoena.

Track one:

Custody pressure.

If Nora announced separation after an explosive public incident, Wesley could seek a temporary parenting schedule preventing either parent from removing June from the area without agreement.

That was not equivalent to taking June away.

It was leverage.

Track two:

Trustee review.

If Nora’s public conduct appeared violent or unstable around June, Margaret planned to request an emergency review of Nora’s role in the Bennett Descendant Trust.

The trust document named Wesley as successor family trustee.

But there was a problem Margaret had minimized.

Wesley had a direct conflict because Harbor Crest wanted trust money.

Commonwealth Fiduciary could block him from acting on the loan even if Nora were removed.

Margaret’s lawyers told her that.

So why stage anything?

Elena asked the same question.

Then Commonwealth produced an old side letter attached to the trust.

If the family trustee became unavailable, the successor could serve immediately for ordinary matters for up to ten business days while the institutional trustee reviewed conflicts.

Extraordinary investment decisions still required Commonwealth approval.

So Wesley could not simply transfer ten million dollars to Harbor Crest.

Not legally.

The trap seemed pointless.

Until Commonwealth’s lawyer found an email from Margaret.

Three weeks earlier:

Would successor trustee be able to execute nonbinding expressions of support or lender comfort letters during interim service?

Answer:

Possibly, depending on wording, but not if designed to circumvent investment approval.

Margaret asked:

Could such a letter extend a project cure period while investment review continued?

No answer appeared in the file.

Nora felt cold.

Margaret did not necessarily need the money by Friday.

She needed time.

A comfort letter from June’s trust indicating the proposal remained under active consideration might persuade Harbor Crest’s lender to extend the cure period.

Then Wesley could work on full approval later.

A temporary trustee suspension lasting even a week could matter.

The second collar now made more sense.

If humiliating June did not provoke Nora strongly enough, Margaret had a second escalation ready.

A matching adult collar.

One insult aimed at the child.

One at the mother.

She was testing which pressure point produced the reaction she wanted.

The first worked.

Nora slapped her.

The second box never needed to open.

Then Elena discovered that Margaret’s assistant had already drafted an email for Monday morning.

Due to an incident at the Whitmore welcome party involving trustee Nora Whitmore, we request immediate review of her continued suitability to administer the June Bennett Subtrust.

No incident existed when the draft was created.
