Chapter 10

The major twist was not that Seraphina had discovered Rourke family secrets.

She had.

Some were real.

Some were ugly.

That alone would have given her leverage.

But it would not have given her enough.

So she manufactured the rest.

Independent forensic examination of the recovered red folder proved that six modern ledger pages had been inserted among authentic historical records.

The original pages were decades old.

The inserted pages were less than three months old.

The handwriting imitated Maximilian’s late father’s notation style.

The transactions described on those pages never occurred.

The bank accounts existed.

The people existed.

That was deliberate.

Seraphina and Felix had built false entries from real names and real historical relationships so the forgery would be harder to dismiss immediately.

The purpose was not to win a criminal trial.

It was to create panic.

A banker seeing the pages might freeze a deal.

A board might demand Maximilian step aside.

A journalist might report that evidence suggested the Rourke family’s old criminal relationships were still financially active.

By the time experts disproved the pages, the damage could already be enormous.

But that was only half the twist.

The recorder and Felix’s planning files showed that Seraphina had deliberately engineered the breakup itself.

She expected Maximilian to return Saturday evening.

Her suitcase was prepared Friday.

Her hotel room was booked.

Her reputation consultant had already drafted two statements.

One described a mutual separation.

The other described Seraphina as:

A fiancée forced from the home after Maximilian Rourke chose an unstable family situation over their future together.

The “unstable family situation” was Anouk.

Seraphina knew Maximilian would choose his daughter.

She wanted him to.

Her plan required him to terminate the engagement.

That allowed Seraphina to become the rejected fiancée instead of the woman walking away with stolen records.

Once outside the mansion, she and Felix intended to send the confidential demand.

Twelve million dollars.

The Manhattan condominium.

Confidentiality.

If Maximilian refused, the real historical documents would be released together with the forged modern pages.

Authentic material would make the fake material more believable.

The three clues now made sense.

Her suitcase had been waiting beside the stairs before Maximilian returned because the exit was scheduled.

She had told Felix that Maximilian “always chooses the girl” and called that “the point” because Anouk was the emotional trigger designed to end the engagement.

And Seraphina had studied Maximilian’s return schedule so she could stage the final confrontation shortly before leaving.

The abuse of Anouk was not an accidental obstacle to the scheme.

It became part of Seraphina’s method of forcing the predictable choice.

She had not needed Maximilian to believe Anouk deserved the treatment.

She needed him to become furious enough to throw Seraphina out.

The cruelty was real.

The blackmail was planned.

The false evidence made the leverage larger.

Maximilian sat across from Claire as the forensic report ended.

For a long time, he said nothing.

Finally:

“She put my daughter under the stairs because she knew I would choose her.”

Claire answered carefully.

“She had already been mistreating Anouk. The evidence supports that she later incorporated your reaction into the exit strategy.”

Maximilian nodded.

The distinction mattered.

Seraphina did not become cruel because of Felix.

Felix did not instruct her to lock a child away.

She was responsible for that.

He looked at the forged pages.

“She thought I’d pay.”

“Yes.”

“Would I have?”

Claire studied him.

“If Anouk’s recorder didn’t exist?”

Maximilian looked away.

That was answer enough.

He had spent a lifetime protecting the Rourke name from exposure.

Seraphina understood him correctly.

May you like

At least she understood the man he had been.

The mistake was assuming he would remain that man after seeing his daughter crawl out from beneath the stairs.
